Okay firstly please don't shoot me, this is just hypothetical....

Anyway up at 2.30am as usual (long story, I blame the tablets) and looking out of the window at Betty and started wondering, what would it be like with say either a Volvo t5 engine or an Alfa V6 instead of the V8 it already has? I know some like dropping in the 3.5 Mazda engine, but with diesel prices going beserk I'm sticking to LPG. So any one any comments (please be nice, leave the pitchforks behind 'cos I can't run very fast anymore).

:D

Volvo = just as heavy, under-powered in a 2.5ton brick, alfa = well.....alfa :alien:

Try more tablets :hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi

I'm not sure about the whole technical aspect of fitting a different engine, but from a power prespective I would have thought a smaller engine like that would be lacking in torque which really is what you need when lugging around a 2.5 ton beast. Ignore the top engine BHP figures as these don't mean that much really today to day and usually come at the top of the rev range.

I've had a fair number of italian motors in the past. Similar questions appear on their forums too....they are usually doin the opposite, asking "can i fit a V8 in this...?" :)
Taking out the V8 n replacing with the Mazda makes sense in many ways....but have to be honest...they sound ****e by comparison!

Bugger the sound, a 200bhp Tdci Transit engine would do nicely. Plenty of room around it to sort a decent cooling system, easy to work on. Either that or a big Toyota lump.

Hi all

I am thinking and have contacted a specialist re putting a 3.6 TDV8 into my P38 DSE it a costly conversion but i love the P38 shape and this would give me all the power needed and still give 25mpg average.

will let you know how we get on, was thinking about getting a rr sport tdv8 but for about 5k why not just upgrade the P38 it owes me nothing and is a great car with a poor unerpowered engine.

watch this space and lets see how i get on.

Tony:)

Did you see my post about the TDV6 conversion? You will need to budget for a stronger gearbox, the ZF4HP22 is not strong enough for a chipped M51 so it certainly won't handle a V6 or V8 diesel. The ZF4HP24 might.

Hi Keith

yes it was your idea that got me talking to the guys that have done the TDV6 conversion as have been thinking about changing for a sport TDV8 and well i still like the P38 but not the slugish m51 engine even with a black box fitted it's very slow up hills etc and with a TDV8 or maybe the TDV6 if they cant fit the V8 fingers crossed.

hoping to have news later this week, but yes the gearbox will have to be changed.

If my premium bonds were to come up big time.............................

Hi All - I have a Def 110 curently fitted with a beautiful Isuzu 2.8 TD, fitted with the original LR V8 Rad and an Allisport intercooler + a LT85 & LT230 Disco Boxes. It does approx 125 KMH max - I am thinking of replacing the engine with a TDV6 - readinga round I hear that is becoming something more and more common. Has any of you heard of this? I know Bells Auto services successfully did one (one off!). Also any alternative for something that needs to cruise European motorways a lot? Or shall I just try and change the final gearing of the diffs perhaps? Suggestions welcome!
Cheers GG
