I am soon to be in the market for a 80s or early 90s Land Rover Defender and I need to make sure it is about as original as I can get it. Does anyone have any guides, tips, etc. for making sure a Land Rover hasn't been changed too much, sources for trustworthy dealers or places to get parts?

Thanks
Myy

You could write a book on buying Land Rover Defenders.
Your best bet is to google "Defender buying guide" which will reveal a wealth of information previously written on forums, in magazines and by Land Rover owner's clubs.

Why does it need to be original? is it going to be a legal issue for importation / road legality ? If so then you really need to identify what is construed as "original".

It has caught a lot of people out when importing to the USA, If you were going to take it back to Germany , what hurdles do you need to jump through?

The chances are that a large amount of 90 /110's from that era,( before 1990 are not technically defenders ) have had a change or two.

If , it is a legality issue then I would suggest finding a good source on here or online who works on the older models, off the top of my head there is Glencoyne Engineering http://www.glencoyneengineeringltd.com/ who may have some info on a good one for sale.

Good luck.

Cheers

I want to keep the car as a souvenir and I move a lot... so I if I go somewhere, it's condition needs to be known so I don't lose it to customs. If I know exactly what the condition of the car is I can make the needed changes before I move.

By original, I mean all the parts should be parts that would have came with it originally. I know a lot of these vehicles get retrofitted with modifications. I don't necessarily mean it should be 100% the parts it was manufactured with, just not some parts from 10 year later models or massively changed.
