what are these holes for

TD5, did a oil and filter change this morning and came across these two threaded holes just back from the drain plug.
Surly they need something in them ???? and have I been loosing gearbox oil or something...thanks for your help

That’s the bell housing and it doesn’t hold oil. The bottom hole is for a wading plug and shouldn’t have anything in it….unless you’re going wading of course. The other one is for a timing bolt, and again should have nothing in it.
