Hi
I have browsed lots of threads about wet footwells and it seems that the main problem is water from heater matrix. However himself has found a wet carpet in the front of his P38 X reg 4.6 auto(only had it 3 weeks) and says its not water cos it feels oily???

Any ideas?
Thanks

Apparently, it doesn't have the smell of anti freeze?

Its just another one of the continuing niggles.

I'd put some newspaper down and see what colour it goes when it gets wet.

I can't think of anything else that might leak there that might be 'oily'. You might get clean water from a leak in the aircon vents.

If it is only on the drivers side then chances are it is the o rings. Presumably the cooling system has got anti freeze in it?

Thanks.

we will try that. If it is the o rings is it a big job for novice or does it need the garage??

It's a bit of a daunting job, but certainly doable. There are a couple of good walkthroughs on this site somewhere which detail the shortcut method that avoids having to remove the whole dashboard.

This'll give you a clue as to what's involved.

Heater Core O-Ring Replacement

Thanks very much for all that.

I have posted the link to himself for further study. I will have a look through for those walkthroughs.

They can be quite hard to find on this site. We keep asking for them to be made as stickies, but they never are. I can't even remember who did the last set for the o rings, but the photos were very very useful when I came to do mine. Hopefully they'll pop up shortly and volunteer the info.

The only time I have ever had water dripping into the footwells, it was slightly soapy at first, then as it continued it seemed to dilute to water.

I don't take it through the car wash anymore - problem solved!!!:D:D

I'm not saying that it's not the O rings but have you had a look at the pollen filters? Blockage up there can cause leaks and if you've got some leaves rotting in there (if the scuttle foam has rotted away) you could get slimy water.

By the way - welcome to a fellow Bristol P38.

Thanks for that. Himself has checked all that and it seems to be O rings. Not being of a technical nature, was wondering if anyone knows anywhere in devizes, chippenham area that works on landys without spending mega bucks by taking it to landrover dealer?

Oooh, don't take it to a main dealer. The official time for the job is 12 hours. That's why the shortcut method was developed!

Hopefully someone can recommend a decent indie. If you don't hear anything, try the General Landy Chat room.

You could try sending a PM to voguese39. He travels and is by all accounts an excellent mechanic. He's setting up a new workshop at the moment though so might not be immediately available.

It's not that bad a job though once you get over the initial fear of starting it. The main issue seems to be undoing the screw that holds the clamp in place, but it might be ok. Mine was fine when I did mine.

If it's leaking, do keep checking the coolant level - you really don't want it getting low. Newspaper under the mat will absorb most of the liquid in the meantime.

Oh dear.
The wet drivers footwell problem has escalated.
Now the aircon isn't working. It was fully recharged when the car was bought and also there is a light on on the dashboard. The light is on the aircon system and is a little book with a ! on it.

Help is it still the O rings???

Hmm. They should have pressure tested the aircon before they recharged it so it shouldn't be a leak (except it probably is).

When you say it isn't working, do you just mean it's not getting cold?

You could probably do with getting the fault code read but that usually costs.

Probably unrelated to the o rings...

You could try getting kwik fit to recharge it - they allegedly won't charge anything if they can't recharge it and they do leak test first.

Is it aircon oil on the mat as there is a matrix up behind the heater matrix and that has to have the dashboard out to replace it but try the o rings for ir first they are accessible from the engine bay.
