my tip for anyone learning to weld, crispy bacon! if it sounds like the sound of sunday morning bacon frying away then you are getting a good weld, obviously more to it than that as you will find out but thats the magic sound your after!

I had a go with my mates the other day on a scrap wing we had laying around and managed to a: not blow a hole in it and b: get the bead on the back to look roughly the same as the front.

Beginners luck I reckon but I should get plenty of practise lol

what make.type of welder.what power is it,ie amperage.

ok,but if it is a cheap low amp welding set,then you will make it hard on yourself to learn to weld.

I can weld, I find it alot easer with a hands free mask, even better with a auto dim mask,
With hands free you can steady the snozel better
If you are a complete beginner start with pig iron that you cant burn through.
As stated cheep welders can be hard work even for folk who can weld

I ran my Sealey 190 on single phase just fine welding up a 5/6mm steel bumper, never had any problems with it.
Personally I'd avoid them too, buy a sealey or even a clarke if you're wanting a cheap but half decent welder with plenty of spares around

+1 for a clarke. I`ve got a 160tm model wich is fine for up to 5mm. I bought this from weld equip on mig-welding.co.uk site, wich is really helpful for tips/tutorials. Don`t bother with the disposable bottles from Halfrauds etc as they last minutes & clean any metal back to a nce clean/shiny surface to get a good earth & then as already said listen for the "frying bacon" sort of sound.
