I was reading a thread on here a while ago but cant seem to find it, anyway some of you guys were saying you use old fire extinguishers for your welding gas, im fed up buying those small bottles for my mig and they dont last very long, how did you fit the regulator to the FE ?

got to have a regulator/flow meter. The threads are different, and a fe is either on or off with a squeeze handle. Don't see it working.

If you can, get hold of an old pub gas bottle? Filled with CO2 these last a hell of a lot longer than small bottles!

I believe I contributed to that very thread and also posted a picture. The thread on the f/e is same as a pub bottle. Buy pub bottle regulatir off ebay, screw onto f/e. My reg cost about £25 - £30. I only did this as I had a free supply of co2 extinguishers. It was recommended to me to turn the thing upside down too, as there is a dip tube fitted inside meaning it comes out in a slightly liquid form which could possibly upset the reg. turn it upside down and you just get clear gas off the top.

Is it Really worth ####ing about unless you have all the stuff for free and a cheap co2 supply..... when you can get a hobbygas cylinder of argoshield filled for 40 quid and do the job right

Yeah just had a look at that on the net theres a place in surrey called Calor in Surrey that supply it so will call em tomorrow

+1, thats what I've got
Mine was £50 deposit and around £25 a refill. Keep as long as you want and when you don't need the cylinder any more reclaim your deposit

Is it worth it when you have a cheap CO2 supply? Well of course it would be.

Never had a problem. never heard of anyone having a problem. I'm sure that if it was the oil industry or a cruise liner. Your point would be relevant but for Land Rovers etc I really don't see it been a problem.

Co2 is better for thick plate......although nowt thick enough on a landy for it to be a benifit.

There are a lot of gasses used for MIG welding. 100% CO2 is great because its dirt cheap and provides a hotter arc for more penetration. This can be a slight disadvantage is is the hotter arc penetrates deeper so can be awkward for slightly thinner stuff. You could use C25 as this is gives a less hot weld and reduces spatter.

should of used the word can, Thin stuff no issue
