no point in having an arc welder unless you're welding really thick metal,mig is the way to go but get one about 150 amps which will enable you to weld everything you're likely to need to on a landy.don't get a gasless one though as they're crap.
 
i have both stick and mig and must agree for automotive welding the mig is the only way to go..

however the arc as a lot more use's when it come's to general fabrication as the mig dosent get the penatration required over a certian thickness(unless your going to buy a decent mig in which case you are looking big money not 99 quid)..

I agree MIG is the way forward for automotive work - however, I had a arc before I got my landy and as thats what I had I made do with it. I went and got some light welding rods and found it was ideal for most things, new tubular outriggers etc... then when you do want to weld the odd bit of heavy duty steel you can do that too.

I've even used an arc welder sucessfully to repair my bulkhead and thats thin metal.
