Week of disaster with TD4

I have just returned from a holiday in North Wales and am wondering who I have upset in a previous life to experience the problems which we have with my wife's Landrover Freelander TD4.

Mid-way through the week, the clutch pedal gave up, leading to an expensive replacement of the master & slave cylinders (£700.00)

We had to be 'rescued' back to Stockport however, the car was in a garage in Bangor and was not available for us to collect until yesterday.

Driving back along the M56 last night there was a sudden loss of power which made me decelerate from 70mph to 50mph. The power then seemed to restore itself and the speed returned to 70mph. This situation occurred several times for the short distance that I had left to travel on the motorway and by the time I left the motorway the car was struggling to deliver 10mph!

After summoning the assistance of Green Flag for the 2nd time in five days the engine lid was lifted to reveal that the long hose (left hand side) from the intercooler to the main thingy (I am not a car expert by any means) was collapsing.

The Green Flag man disconnected this hose and the car was 'driveable.' He suggested that the intercooler may be blocked.

My father in law and I have spent the whole day under the bonnet trying to deliberate as to what the problems is and appear to have eliminated the intercooler, as the right hand side inlet sucks considerably when the flexible hose is removed.

What happens now is that when the accelerator is pressed, both the longer hose from the intercooler and the shorter 90degree 'elbow' type hose at the other end of the main 'thingy' both collapse.

We have checked the air filter which appears to be ok however, it seems that the hoses described above are collapsing due to a shortage of air from 'elsewhere.'

It has now gone dark and we have given up looking for the 'simple' non-mechanic identifiable failures which could have occurred and would be grateful for some help from people 'more in the know' as to what could be the problem.

Given the £700 spend on the clutch this week, I am praying that this problem is not too sinister.

Please help!!!

CHANGE BOTH RUBBERS, one has probably collapsed inside ,clean out all the ****e [oil] put back and try again, few jubli clips hours job £27 then see how it runs. . .:) :) :)

Ming,

Thanks for your reply to my debut as a Landyzone nuisance.

Both hoses (if thats what you meant) have been changed but still continue to collapse when you rev the engine.

In fact, if you sit in the car revving the wretched thing is rocking as if something is really being starved of airflow from somewhere!!!

:( :( :(

You say Both the hoses to and from the intercooler are collapsing???
What happens if you remove the air filter box cover??

if the intercooler was bunged up the r/h hose should inflate ?? i think??

Oh welcome!

there is a blockage somewhere, if both hoses are sucking in then i'd say the turbo isn't spinning or the air filter is blocked, air filter will have to be minging to cause that though, turbo seems more likely due to the possibility of the breather being blocked

Are you getting alot of blue smoke and oil out of the exhaust? is the oil level ok?

Take off the air filter cover (5 5mm allen bolts) unclip the air inlet pipe from the air flow meter and pull the other end of the inlet pipe off the turbo (its a bit fiddly and tight in there) try and turn the turbo with your fingers, it should turn freely with no scraping or binding, if its seized then it will need to be replaced, the rocker cover breather should also be replaced as this will have caused it

Who is surprised to see my new request about the noise was made after 'clutchy' jumps in again ?? :) :)

Thanks for your replies chaps. All very useful and informative.

Particular thanks to Mad-Hatty who was spot on with his advice. We managed to retrieve a sheep from one of the intercooler hoses thus resolving the problem.

Only joking! - I have had the car hooked up to a garage's computer today and it would appear the airflow sensor(?) and boost sensor(?) are goosed.

Should be sorted by tomorrow (I am advised) but won't hold my breath.

Thanks for your assistance chaps, particularly Mad-Hatty who was spot-on with his diagnosis.

As he suspected we managed to recover a sheep from one of the intercooler hoses thus sorting the problem.

But seriously, I have had the car hooked up to a garage computer today (why haven't I got one of those things!) and have been advised that the airflow sensor and boost sensors are both goosed.

Should be sorted tomorrow but, hey, this a Freelander after all. There must be something else wrong mustn't there???????????????????

Just read on another forum that these blocked breather filter problems were mainly (for BMW) with the Garrett turbos only, the problem (at BMW) seems to be solved by now ?? Don't know what they did but that's what I read.

Just an update. Still not had car back from garage and just to top it all, it's just failed its M.O.T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (on the colour of the indicator lamps of all items)

I work at land rover and we're getting them all the time, all the bmw diesels suffer, i.e td4 freelander and td6 range rover

What have i done now?

Nothing wrong at all, quite to the contrary, after I saw you were participating again I took the opportunity and entered my (re)new(ed) request about the unwinding, ticking noise I can hear when I shut down my Td4 engine, ( see http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/unwinding-noise-34644.html ) noise is already there (while engine still running so it is not caused by shutting it off) as I can hear it if I get out of the car (in the garage with no outside noise) before I shut down the engine, on condition it is under these 30 to 40% of the times that the noise is there of course. As it is not present all the time I am really puzzled as to what it could be, as I noticed this already since a couple of years I suppose this is nothing critical ?

I heard it also once with myh neighbours Td4 (his is MY05, mine MY01) so I can't believe our two engines are the only ones having this phenomenea ??

ello willo, i haven't been on for a while as been up to other stuff and not been on much, anyway with regard to your problem, eeeeeerrrrrrrrr.......... i really dont know, its one of those things where i'm gonna need to hear it to try to work out what it is, something i've not come across in my every day experience as a landy tech, why not video it and put it up on youtube.com so we can all hear and maybe help you out.

got some of my V8 on there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_RLR4LUviE turn your speakers up!!!!!!
