[SIZE=-1]We have a 2002 freelander 1.8es petrol. When engine is cold amber engine malfunction light flashes & engine lacks power but all OK when engine warm. Also high pitched whistling sound when cold. Landrover tried to fix 3 times including reprogramming but problem still persists. Local LR specialist tried to help but car too new for their computer. Sounds like a sensor fault to me. Trouble with modern engines is they have too many sensors and when just one goes wrong it causes all sorts of problems. So, if the ECU thinks there is a fault it goes into safe mode and won't deliver 100% power. Doesn't rev very high when light is on right?
I had similar problems on a Vauxhall. Turned out to be a cam shaft sensor that had packed up.
