Information: 1980 Dodge RamCharger 4x4. Belive I have a Dana 44 front axle.
Old hublocks were "spicers"?. Old hublocks were very difficult to get
between locked and free (vehicle had to be moving slowly). Also, old
hublocks read "Free" when locked, and "locked" when free. - So I replaced
them with a new set of Warn Standard Manual hublocks.
Got the new Warn hublocks on. Work well (easy to switch between locked and
free, read correctly and engage/disengage properly). I have ONE problem.
In the Warn included install instructions, it says to install the hub body
and large lock ring, then with two cap screws, check for inside/outside
"float".
If there is no float, they said to tighen the wheel bearings to factory
spec. I removed the wheel bearing lock nut/washer, and tighened the adjuster
nut to 30ftlbs (too tight?!). Installed washer with groove in place, and
stud from adjuster nut in place. Tighened lock nut to 55 ft lbs.
STILL no float after re-installed hub body. Everything is really well
greased. On the passenger side, I just put it the hub body in, and there was
no float. Installed cap anyway, tighened all 6 allen screws on each side.
Seem to work fine?
Does it matter that I did all work with the vehicle raised (both axles on
jack stands)?
Is the float really that important? Am I missing something?
Thanks!
