Has anyone seen the TV ad for the Toureg, another uninspiring clone SUV made by VW? Their
ad claims you can "drive it through 22 inches of water." I wonder how long it will take VW
to get hit with a nice lawsuit after some soccer mom and her crib full of kids gets washed
away trying to prove that point?

There's probably a disclaimer there in microdot print that says "highly
modified model shown, actual sales model may differ in so many way we
can't list them"

Actually already every standard BMW can pass 50cm of water at low speeds. This is part of the
standard test procedure during development. Why shouldn't VW be able to this?

Because it encourages stupidity on the part of chronic bad drivers. In my state we can get
flash floods where 22" of water will sweep that trendy VW SUV clone downstream into Baja.
Fortunately, people stupid enough to try such stunts - if they survive - must pay for the
cost of their rescue.

The VW classic beetle can do better than that, as a DJ in Green Bay
proved...for a short time.

Because if the water is not obeying your low speed rule, 20" is enough
to cart off your VW, even weighed down with a trunk full of Ikea and
Pottery Barn merchandise.

No, that is 50mm. 50cm is 1/2 of a meter or about 20".

VW is probably talking about a puddle 22 inches wide, not deep...

Isn't that just the same as makers selling cars that can do 140mph? Isn't
your soccer mom simply going to drive too fast as she's obviously very
stupid?

Aye, there's the rub. "...obviously very stupid" is not a reason for
responsibility, but rather for lawsuit.

As has been noted on this thread already, as a carmaker, I'd have
never given the suing public a specific safe water depth.

Here's a tip from the British legal system to greatly reduce litigation:

Put judges in charge of deciding the size of damages, not juries.

Only appoint crusty old judges more than 70 years of age who think $1000 is
a lot of money still.

It works a treat - in the US you get $9m for spilling coffee on your lap
whilst driving, in the UK you get your licence endorsed for being stupid
enough to drive with hot coffee in your lap! :)

For that she would use the Cayenne, which goes 160, but not thru
20 inches of water, as the ride height control won't allow it.

Well, and every time we reach such a discussion it ends up with the conclusion that the driver has
to drive - not the vehicle.
See the ORDFAQ for this: http://www.offroaders.com/info/4x4-faq.htm

Oh good I hope they try and make that claim in court; especially since the ad
specifically said "deep"

And if you think that's funny, I just saw the TV commercial for this
ugly thing. Jetta takes a run at a snowbank the plow just left, ends up
high centered, and I mean really high centered like the dumbass could
have just as easily rolled it, then this Togakeg or whatever it's called
just blasts through this snowbank with it's revolutionary 4wd system.
Anyone know where the tow points on those things are so I won't rip any
cheesy plastic off pulling them off snowbanks this coming winter?

That's the miracle of television; it explains why Faux and Bill O'Riotous are so popular.

How many of you take your $30,000.00+ 4x4 pick ups and SUVs and drive like
maniacs off road, flying across rocks and racing down bad roads just because
they do it on the TV commercials? Have you seen the latest Ford 4x4 TV
spots? It jars my back just watching. I would hope that we all know better
without needing to see a disclaimer.

There's a huge difference between a forest stream and a raging flash flood.
If some asshole in a VW, or any other vehicle, wants to cross any water
current then we can only hope that they'll wade out to make sure that it's
not too deep and get washed away. The car won't be in the way until the
water subsides and we won't have to spend tax dollars to pull it out. They
can fish the body out with a rope and you can get 50' for $1.99 at Wal*Mart.
If the families want to launch lawsuits against VW they can stand behind the
parents who sued Black Sabbath. Aren't we better off without these people?
Let's get Ozzie to write a song telling all VW owners who have seen the
commercial, and who will cross deep water, to kill themselves before it's
too late. It'll work. It's only a small switch from 'death by stupidity' to
'death by suicide'. Suicide sounds much nicer and is something that we
should all be encouraging to anyone stupid enough to listen and buy into.
The more of them off of the road the better it is for society as a whole and
anyone who is successful can feel proud that they were able to make a
difference.

Just my opinion.....................

Ha! Enough to make off offroading hazardous for the rest of us! I used to hear losers in
the Tacoma Group whine about that very thing! They saw a Tacoma flying through the air or
blasting through mud and water, they try it, they **** up, they go to the dealer and guess
what? The dealer won't fix (under warranty) the damage done as a result of the owner's
stupidity. Bad driving on road means worse driving (by a factor of at least X10) offroad.

And speaking of VW, another ad for the same piece of **** Toureg shows it blasting through
a snowbank and zipping down a snow covered road. Who makes up this ****, anyway?

Yes Yes Yes. The population needs to be thinned out anyway. Let's start with the morons

It is really quite trivial to blast thru a snowbank and zip down a
snow covered road. You don't even need a 4x4 to do this, can be
done by your gramma's Buick Roadmaster.
