Had a test drive in both a 2.5 and 5.0 diesel versions today. Very
impressive.

2.5 is very refined with good suspension and sensible equipment at a
half sensible price. Like the tailgate with opening glass top compared
to my X5. May have less power but not noticeable on the short blast
that I had.

5.0 goes like a bomb. Lovely standard equipment. Interesting options.
Ride slightly harsher than 2.5, possibly due to low profile tyres
combined with air suspension. Engine massively powerful and generally
refined except for a harsh point when loaded at around 2000erpm. Love
it.

Greatest revelation is how well my X5 has held its value since its
purchase March last. Offered only £1000 less than list price at the
time against the list of the V10, which is admittedly, £53000.

Am minded to leave it for a year to for the VW range to consolidate
and for resale values to become apparent, then maybe I will consider
one. Maybe a 2.5 against my Toyota. Then again, anything could happen
before then.

Car magazine tested all of them and reckoned the 4.2 V8 was the best of the
bunch.

Get a Volvo XC90 - Very safe, the T6 petrol is quite quick (and well
capable of single figure fuel consumption), it's big, got seven seats,
comfortable, nice interior and sound system, works well on and off road and
is a generally OK car.

My dealer has just flogged a 27000 mile diesel for 1500 above list and
there's a 6 mth waiting list for new - residuals are looking a bit heavy (I
intend to try and find a three year old one in 2005/2006)

I have a main dealer within two miles. Pity I don't really like the
look of the car. The more I see it, the less I like it :-(

If residuals keep up to anything like that extent then you might as
well get one now if you want one. Not much saving to be made on used.
In five or six years time [say 2007], your 2003 model will inevitably
be just ready to take a huge plunge.
