take whole donor VVC engine+loom, swap+splice

I got as much of the engine bay loom as I could. I did have to cut away a section that goes under the ABS pump assembly and goes through the firewall in front of the glove box.

Do have the fuse box, box with the screw in fusible links, ABS plug, ECU Plugs.... Recovered the Red box from the rear of the cabin fuse box [from below and in front of the driver's legs].

HAveI left anything critical behind?

Did you get the remote key fob? You may need one if you have to use the 200 immobiliser unit. I suspect you can programme the VVC ECU to match the Freelander's immobiliser.
Once you have the compete engine. Plug up the harness to make sure you have all the sensor connections. Add any that are missing, then graft the harness into the Freelander.

Sadly no keys / fob :( All engine sensors were left plugged in situ'. This will be a long term project. These ECU code readers that are available. Is there any that can be used to redo/alter key/immobiliser codes?

I could also fit an aftermarket ECU [Emerald, MegaSquirt ...] This is an area that is completely foreign to me. How do you go about copying and existing set-up into one of these ECUs?

Like DM said, I'm pretty sure the code will transfer across ok. The Mems 1.9 and Mems 2J are pretty similar. The 2J has a few extra sensors and the VVC control solenoid output, in addition it has the DIS coil output. Otherwise they are much the same. Changing the codes shouldn't be an impossible task.
