For a new short engine and extra parts, allow around £2500 + labour.
If you are fitting a new engine, you need the rest of the parts to be in A1 condition, rocker shafts, tappets, flex. drive plate, starter ring gear, oil pump etc.etc.

No matter what bells and whistles your car may have, you have to weigh up how much it's worth if you do the work and its running fine.
At the moment, it's a recovery truck job to get it moved and that will bear heavily on it's current value as it stands as a potential buyer, if you sell it "As is" will be buying an unknown quantity.
Unless of course, you intend keeping it for some considerable time, during which, it will depreciate in value anyway at a rate that could plummet depending on fuel cost increases and age.

sure there must be lots of small garages that would change the engine for a good price, its not a massive job, s/h engine would be about £600/800 I reckon, less than £1300 easy id say all in. Just shop around.

Given the known problems with the 4.0/4.6, V8's, buying second hand is a real gamble especially if it has been removed from the car and can't be fired up. Even hearing an engine running for a short while can be like tyre kicking....it needs to be running until fully up to temperature and taken up to decent rev's, not just ticking over.
It's down to money at the end of the day and also whether it's your intention to keep the car for some time or just get rid once the engine is fixed

Sounds a nice motor. Pity Land Rover decided to fit such a crap engine in it. Apart from the old Triumph Stag engine one of the most under engineered motors ever. Top hat liners and a stiffer block would have added a few hundred quid to initial cost and made a good motor.
