hi. any advice will be greatly appreciated. i viewed a defender 110 county G reg 1990 , tdi today. it was generally straight but the bottom of all the doors where corroded. is this a really bad sign ? i was assured it would look great after a light respray . also please , how oil tight are these engines normally ? many thanks in advance for any help.

You can fix some Ali strips to the bottom of
the Doors this covers up the rust and pitting
for a few years even my doors on my 1994
were going and also the ali looks good

Mine had a leak at the rocker cover now fixed..
also got a leak at the PTO cover on the Transfer
box fixing that now..
It has a leak in the sump gasket that will be fixed
on my next full service and MOT

They leak everywhere but you then know they got oil in

Happy Land Rovers

depends on the price of the 110 dont it?
if it were 900 quid then it aint a real big problem.
if it were 4500 squid then i would walk/run away.

what does he want for it?

doors are fairly expensive. is it just 2 or all 4? you could prob knock off around £500 on the basis that the doors need renewing... worth a try.

They are about as oiltight, gearboxes and engines, as the Titanic was watertight. Some leaks are easily fixed, others quite difficult. Good regular servicing should help bb

thanks for your replies. its a 4 door 200 TDI & he wants £2800 for it . i was just a bit worried that as the doors are scruffy , the rest of it might follow soon. it has just gone through an MOT although it needed at patch at the back. the bulkhead looked ok & as far as i could see apart from signs of oil underneath it looked ok. i have got chequer plating priced up & it looks reasonable ,although im wondering if it would be better to spend a bit more & get a better one to start with . thanks again.

If you can spend a bit more go for the 300tdi
engine dont buy the 1st one look around
take your time I looked at a few dogs before
I made up my mind but was lucky mine owned
by one family from new with all service history

I got a 1992 110 CSW and the doors were also knackered. That was the liest of my problems... I quite enjoy working on my landy, but to get it through the MOT it needed sever things.
Rear crossmember - took ages, if you do it, pay the extra couple of quid for the one with the fittings (cost £120 inc rods and discs)
Refurbished the steering box (took even longer paid a garage to use their hydrolic(sp?) press, cost about £40)
changed the shocks cos they were leaking (quite easy cost £90 cos I got yellow ones!!)
the other jobs I've done are cosmetic, but now there are two major jobs,
The main thrust bearing is going and I'm not about to do it myself (£160 ish)
The steering pump is airating the fluid, (I'm refurbing the pump, cost £10 ish )

I think if you were to pay a garage to do these jobs it would cost a pretty penny. If I was going to take the ca to a garage, I'd get the best one I could afford, if, like me, you enjoy repairing things your self, its not so critical to get a pristene example.

'bait.

if everything else on the landy is sound then dont base buying it or not on the condition of the doors. if the chasis is generaly sound and its mechanically sound then dont turn all that down for rusty doors. sure they may be in bad shape but its not dangerous and will not leave u stranded somewhere. my advise. if this is all u can find wrong and all else is good then go for it cos ifs that the worst u can find wrong, then u've found a gooden.
hope this helps

thanks again for your replies. although i do enjoy having a go at stuff my myself my cars usually end up in a garage due to the lack of time left to work on them after family & work . now i have got a few tips im going to try to view a few more & hopefully post a picture as soon as i have found one that feels right. - or probably i will have more questions to ask ! thanks
