Hi
Was just wondering about fitting vented disc to a LR90. its obvious that vented disc are much wider than standard and it would appear that you would need wider calipers, i have read in the manual that you shouls'nt seperate the calipers. I had very simular problem with an ldv400 i had 2 sets of calipers good ones were to narrow for vented discs, crap ones were exactly the same but with a spacer between. i simply removed spacer from crap caliper and put it in good caliper bled it all up and gave em good test and mot'd it fine had no probs.
Can i do the same thing with the 90's brakes, can i simply buy a 'spacer' or is it whole new caliper job?

You can split calipers. You could fit a spacers.....altho don't know of a supplier.

Would be simplier to sell yours and buy appropriate calipers.

Why do you think you needed vented discs anyway, they clog up real easy when off road. A solid disc system in good shape is often plenty.

The only mods I recommend are be to fit braided hoses for less 'balloning' and stainless caliper pistons so eliminate seized pistons.

I was more of a thought really, i see your point about the vents now, was definitely gonna ss hoses, as i know about the balloon effect, but it had occured to me about the vents being another mud capturing place, like you need another one of them on a landy.
Only real advantage i see with em would be more effective braking on the road. But if they full of mud then they not working properly, so no real advantage.
I do do a lot of towing as well as off roading, hmmm, pro's con's, what best all rounder.

here you go vag: Zeus Engineering

Zeus make the bits you need. Im in almost the same predicement as you. I find that with my 90 fully loaded the brakes are pretty awefull. I have SS hoses and its had new pads etc etc, but still not great. I have the spacer kit here from a set of calipers I split a longtime back, so would only need the disks and longer bolts to make the move over.

Andy, as I do more travelling/green lanes in my 90 than out and out mudplugging, do you think vented makes much difference to performance?

Assuming you mean me........vented discs are there to help disappaite heat and reduce brake fade.

A simple brake fluid change is all that is needed in a lot of situations and you'd be surprised what difference that can make.

To be honest I'd still stay with solid discs. I've raced*, green laned, trialled and done challenge events on solid discs and not yet found the need for anything else.

* that is normal short course comp safari, not hill rally which could well be a different kettle of worms :)
