Just had my VCU replaced by Austen - Bell Engineering - drove up this morning and about 30 mins later was driving home - genius

It is a definite improvement so I was right in that my old one was going.

Advice don't wait too long- the Frenbie feels a lot better with the recon fitted.

How many miles had your car done? And what made you choose to change it?

It had done 91,000 - I had a 2.0DL before this TD4 and that did 110k but the Tyres wore in steps and there was a bearing noise as well as rear Tyres scrabbling on reverse up a driveway oh yes and the locking or tightening when turning.

So this one stated tightening up and when I bought it it had a set of mismatched Tyres - Also I noticed one of the hanger rubbers was worn and causing a wobble on acceleration.

To be honest you just know it's gonna be a problem at that mileage so for £300 fitted it's insurance and piece of mind. Austen from Bell Engineering knows his stuff and did a great job at really short notice. For the extra I would have the hanger bearings done as well like I did.

I took the prop off my last one - it improved mpg and felt nimbler but it just wasn't a 4x4 and I was getting front wheelspin often.

I bought my 05 TD4 back in January when it had done 85k. Its now on almost 90k.
It had a full service history from Land Rover for the first 3 years then was serviced by an independent garage.
I purchased it from a garage and it had been badly maintained - I knew nothing about the Freelanders back then - the car drove like crap. I found the tyres had been inflated to 30 psi front 26 rear - checking the handbook found they should be 30 psi all round.
Anyway I have no idea if my VCU has been changed already. Ive done the reversing on lock and no problems at all. Also done the tippex test and the marks move as expected. Looking at the VCU looks pretty clean (as much as I dont know what they usually look after 90k).
Maybe its been changed already!

Maybe - the tell tell is when they start tightening up on full lock forwards or reverse - then it's time to change although even new there is a little tightening - it is a 4x4 after all.

The thing that messes them up is mismatched Tyres - the handbook says fit Tyres in sets of 4 or if not always put new on the back and move the old ones to the front. This is important it seems.

you are right ,obviously as front wheels are driven slightly faster than back with viscous allowing the differential the more you make this difference ie new tyres on front but worn on rear the harder the viscous has to work ,rr have equal drive front back so viscous dosent have this added strain but rr need 4 equal sized tyres, wheras freelanders are better with slightly bigger on rear
