I am considering replacing the chassis on my S3 88".

I have had someone interested in buying the old one to restore as they say that it is repairable. In their words they "have seen far worse". They are also interested in the old bulkhead, which is really quite badly rotten.

During its life it has had new front and rear cross members and front dumb irons. Also, most of the outriggers look to have been replaced at some stage. The welding varies considerably in quality. There are also a few patches and one holes that needs patching.

Can anyone here give me a rough idea of what it could be worth?

I remember reading that the chassis number should be on the passenger side front dumb iron. As this has been replaced it doesn't have one anymore. The vehicle was registered before that date that it would need one. I would be selling it without an ID.

It is also handy that they would bring a van to fetch it and have offered to bring a hoist to remove the engine. Therefore I don't need to advertise or move it anywhere.

Thanks for any info.

I had a S3 88 chassis in about the same condition and got £15 from the scrap man. Take whatever you can get!

Ask for offers .. you can always ask for (a bit) more, you can't add any on once you've set a price!!

make sure there isn't an id on it... wouldn't want them registering it using yours id! as it is its scrap metal

what are you planning to replace it with?

Thanks for the replies. I think I will bite the bullet and buy a galvanised chassis to replace it.

Otherwise, I could have the one I have at the moment repaired now and it could have half a dozen more holes in it next year. I also don't know how much rust it has on the inside.

It's not just someone from the street buying it, it's a well known firm that restores and sells Land Rover parts.

I would be happy to get £50 for it if they can collect it. Before this, I was considering borrowing an oxy-acetylene kit and cutting it up.

You cannot legally fit a used chassis to another vehicle for use on the road so who do they sell them too?
When I changed my chassis it was recommended old one was cut up and photo taken to prove it had been scrapped.Easy enough to cut up with a hacksaw.

I didnt know that they could not be reused.

I couldnt find any number on my chassis, but there is a plate rivetted to the bulkhead. I assume that these are the numbers referred to?

If there is any doubt, I do have a picture of the chasiis in the back of my motor and a paper slip from the scrap man :D

very few folks on this or any other forum can with absolute certainty be sure they don't have a secondhand chassis under thier old landrover once the offside dumbiron has been replaced

so on saying that, to prevent any future confusion over chassis numbers all you really need to do is chop the offside dumbiron off just behind where the spring bolts to unless the dumbiron has already been replaced in which case there shouldn't be a number on the chassis anyway

technically you would still be breaking the law in re-using that chassis under a different rebuild but it would be almost impossible to prove if it was done discretely

in other words, "if you do it, keep your mouth shut" :)
