V8i Diagnostics?

Anyone any experience with these things?

Im thinking of getting one and at £125 its a lot cheaper than the Bearmach Hawkey one that they want £295 plus an extra £45 if I dont have the later 16 pin adapter.

The only problem I have so far is that when I asked them if it was compatible they told me that it should but I will need to confirm this myself by looking at this link:

Im about 99% sure it is the same as its def not the GEMS or Thor Motronic engine but their pic is grainy and the engine slightly different to mine, can anybody please confirm mines the same so that I can be 100% sure before I order?

Yeah, I've got one of them for my RRC - it's actually not a bad bit of kit. You could do most checks with a multi meter but the ECU mate is much quicker and more convenient. If you do have a 14 CUX then it should be fine. Easiest way to check I would think is to actually pop your ECU out and see what the label says. In a Disco the ECU is in a different place to a RRC, I think it is tucked up behind the glove box or something. What you will need to look for though is the diagnostic plug. I know the RRC has a 5 pin TTS plug I would assume a Disco would have the same but don't know for sure.

I dunno how far away you are but you are welcome to pop over and have a go with my ECU Mate if that helps.

Cheers mate Ive just put it into the AA routefinder (Nanerch near Holywell?) and your nearly 2 hours away

right Ive just had a good rummage under the glovebox and managed to find the electric windows ECU, the Immobilizer ECU, the cruise control ECU and the ABS ECU, I decided to check the other side and found an Electronic Injection control unit AMR 3242 with 14 CUX stamped on it (and also what looks like a mercedes logo with 80505 A stamped next to it) and a date code 0996, Think I have it.

Also I think I found the diagnostic cable only prob is it looks like a 16 pin unless im looking at the wrong one, the one on the Ebay item is a 5 pin.

Could anyone please confirm if the Discovery diagnostics socket is a 16 pin or a 5 pin?

Just found this online I wonder if its the right kit to adapt a 16 pin to a 5 pin?

Go back along the loom from the 14Cux plug about 12-15" and you should find the 5 pin socket you are looking for with a male plug already plugged in.
The Hotwire 14Cux on Disco's,RR Classics and Defenders,(And junk like Morgan Plus 8's,TVR's etc) was never set up to be diagnosed through the 16 pin OBD socket.

Cheers mate I just went out and had a look but it was a mission as its now dark and I only had my ****ty phone torch with me, is it a round plug or a rectangle one? I seen quite a few different ones but TBH I didnt know what to look for.

Dont suppose anyone has any pics of the aforementioned 5 pin plug to make my life easier?

BTW if/when I do find it is it a simple case of unplug it and plug in the ECUmate and she will just start up as usual (and drive)?

Bit new to all this diagnostics (and Electrics tbh)

Yep, that's where I be! So probably a bit far just to pop in but if you're over this way sometime you know where I am.

From the photos, definitely a bog standard 14 CUX hot wire injection system.

Like eightinavee said, diagnostic plug should be a cream/white colour with a plug already on it (should have a single black wire on the terminating plug to earth out to reduce/remove interference so the ecu doesn't get confused!).

If you follow the loom back to where the tune resistor is and the main relays, you should hopefully find some wires bound together breaking out of the main loom with said plug on the end. Mind you, I seem to remember somebody (Mr Noisy I think) saying there was no diagnostic plug on their efi loom. It may be the case the wires are there but tucked back inside the main loom.

Here's a pic of an RRC EFI loom showing main plug, tune select resistor,diagnostic plug (the white thing!) main efi relay, fuel pump relay, air con relay base and fuses (can't remember what the fuses do!)

Yes, plug in ECUMate and spark it up but I wouldn't recommend driving while the reader is plugged in because 1: you'll be distracted from the road ahead and 2: the leads could get tangled and you end up in a ditch or a hedge!

You don't need to be driving to see if there is a problem on a hot wire system, or at least that is my experience so far.

It may not be that easy to find,but I've never seen one with the plug missing - they are generally just tucked away.
Dont get too excited though,live data and codes on a 14Cux are fairly limited,worlds away from even Gems or Thor on P38's.
