V8 Disco 2 cold start help needed

When my Disco is cold she starts ok, runs for 30 seconds then cuts out, it does this a few times then is possible to drive off, almost as if trying to run and old car without choke.

Please can anyone help me as she runs sweet as a nut when warmed up
 
The ECU runs the engine at an elevated speed for 20-30 seconds then reduces to fast tickover, then to normal tickover as the engine warms up.

It sounds like your idle air control valve might be sticking.

I did think it might be that Peter, I had it off a while back but couldn't clean it very well due to it being a sealed unit, any tips for cleaning or do you think it might need replaced?
 
It is the unit that has two pipes and with pipes removed it has something that resembles a countersink bit inside?
I did gently push it with my finger but didn't want to force it as I read somewhere not to as it can knock it out of position,
I will give it a go when I get off work tomorrow

Hi Peter,
the idle air control valve is all cleaned but still the problem exists, I spoke to a Shetland Land Rover Club friend and he said it could be the cold start sensor, I have done web searches and cannot find one or where it is located, I thought only diesels had them, can you shed some light on it?

No such thing on a V8, there is only the air temp sensor in the MAF and the engine temp sensor on top of the block by the water outlet pipe.

Did the armature move freely in the idle control valve?

It turns, but I only touched it gentle and did not want to try and push it back, it is getting gradually worse, when driving off now she is coughing and spluttering till she warms up the running sweet again, I fitted a new coolant temp sensor a couple of weeks ago which sorted the gear changing a treat, I will order a new air flow meter next then

3.9 had a temp sensor for such
this is from d2 manual,wouldnt it suggest coolant temp is used
The ECT sensor is located at the front of the engine adjacent to the coolant outlet pipe. The ECT sensor forms a vital
part of the ECM operating strategy, and therefore the optimum control of the running of the engine. Richer air/ fuel
ratio is required at lower coolant temperatures such as cold starting. Coolant temperature information from the ECT
sensor is also vital to enable the ECM to weaken the air/ fuel mixture as temperature rises to maintain low emissions
and optimum performance.
 
It is times like this that I wish there was a motorway to the mainland so I could meet up with folk that know about Land Rover engines, there maybe is a body here but I have yet to find him/her.

Do the ECT Sensor and MAF Meter work in conjunction with one another? I know new parts can fail but my gearbox is still changing up and down how it should, I am waiting on RAVE downloading again so I can have a good read, but could take all night with this ultra quick Broadband

rave suggests just ect is used to monitor engine temp
 
I am frantically searching Rave to find the section I studied that made me change the ECT sensor to sort out the gear changing, although it has been changed the starting fault has not altered.

I know it must sound strange to you being so good with engines that changing the ECT sorted my auto box issue, when I find it I will try and post it on here so you can read it.

You must think I am mad but they must be connected somewhere
