For the second time in two weeks of ownership of my 2001 V6 it overheated today, and it is using a lot of water on a daily basis, it has been to Nationwide Autocentre in Lincoln last week and they found no fault (leaks, fan worked ok, tested coolant for exhaust gases none found),

However, it is after a short run pressurising the coolant bottle and it heats up from cold to middle of the gauge in a matter of 2-3 minutes.

I'm almost certain of it being head gasket releated, does anybody have any other ideas?

Treev. . .check unless you've already done it. . . 1 engine block thermostat 2 pump flow 3 air lock 4 radiator cap [not pressurizing] know this is basics but worth a look ,hope it helps. . . Ming:cool:

It has in the last year by the previous owner had (all at Land Rover in Boston)
1. A new radiator fitted.
2. A new engine thermostat fitted.
3. Checked head gaskets, not pressurising.
4. Modified header tank/cap fitted.
5. Pressure tested and vacuum filled the cooling system.
6. Last week the coolant was tested for exhaust gasses and it passed.

I was going to get in contact with the previous owner as he only lives 10miles away if the head gasket had gone and that was the reason he traded it on.

Any other ideas?

All help welcome.

Treev. . .If you had your coolant checked last week doubt if its hg ,try taking your engine thermostat out and run motor without it,see if it still gets to hot, worth a try. . . Ming

Will give it a go,

Where is the thermostat located?

The other question is why is it losing coolant?

It heats up from cold in about 1 mile, and it boils over when driving slowly in first gear (e.g. traffic jams, multi-story car parks).

It's almost as if the cooling system can't cope.

Sorry don't know where [never worked on a v6]but a Haynes manual will show ya,drain ya coolant in a clean container and re use, your thermostat will be closed when ya 1st start the motor and flow will be engine/heater matrix, and no flow through radiator, when engine reaches the predetermined temp ,the thermostat will open ,and then flow through radiator, and inrush air will cool it,so if your thermostat does not operate correctly [things will get hot] nother thing and know this might sound silly, your not filling you expansion tank to the top are you ? as for the loss of coolant, if that thermostat is not working . . .bish bosh. . .Ming

You will find the thermostat in the middle of the block located under the inlet manifold in the end of a plastic holder,oh yeh its a bitch of a job and you will need a few new gaskets not a good job for a novice or the sqeemish im afraid, tiga do you electric fans cut in when it gets just past half way on the gauge? do they work when aircon on?

I'm only filling the water bottle to the mark on the bottle not to the top. I'm fairly experienced with engines, my last car a Calibra V6 the thermostat was located in the same place, (and yes bitch of a job).

The fan cuts in as it should and it only runs hot when going slowly in first gear, i,e car-parks and traffic. On tick-over it's fine.

Go for the Ming theory got to be on the button [well worth the effort] save the dosh. . .but good thoughts from the Tig. . .lets have some more. . .Ming:cool:
