What would you say is a good price for replacement?
I suspect a split hose or stat housing as well.

Just trying to decide how much I should offer for it :)

It depends on why it failed an how hot it got. If it's been really cooked it's better to swap the engine ;)
If it's not failed to badly and you can do the spanner work yourself? Then it's not a hugely expensive job. There are plenty of HG kits on ebay for around £100 add to that some new cam belts and a water pump and a few other parts like the thermostat the price for parts creeps up to around £250!!

Yeah I must admit I kinda fancy having a go.
Problem is there is no coolant left at all so I have to assume it got very hot.
I'm thinking the heads might be knackered. Might still be worth it though.

Depending on how hot it got does affect what needs to be corrected. The heads are pretty robust tbh. I've only seen one warp due to an overheat which is a good thing but obviously they will still need to be carefully checked. I don't skim the head as a matter of course like some suggest unless it's warped as it needlessly removes the surface hardening which will shorten the gaskets life anyway. What can happen if it's been very hot is the seal at the bottom of the liner can fail. If this happens the bottom of the block needs to be stripped so the piston/ liner assemblies can be removed for checking and re-sealing. This would require the engine to come out !!
The KV6 is very doable provided you have space and time ;)
