Hello. Somebody tried to remove catalytic converter from V6 Freelander? i have 89.000 km on clock and my cat needs to be replaced or deleted. Too much rattle. What about Check engine light after removal? Maybe oxygen sensor mounting extender helps?

I'm assuming that you don't need a cat in your area, to pass a road worthiness test?

It is possible to remove the cats, there are 2 or 3 depending on spec. The pre-cat O2 sensors must remain in place, as the ECU uses the information for fuelling. The post-cat sensor can be removed and some kind of "fudge" put in it's place. However from my experience, these are hit and miss. An extender might work but also might not. An electronic solution might also work, but again, might not. The ECU is quite smart, and able to tell if the cat is there or not. In the long term, it's easier to replace a faulty cat with a factory replacement, or aftermarket alternative.

... then i need oem or aftermarket solution, maybe You know which brand of catalytic converters is good?

Excusing me for ambushing this thread but it's made me think.

How do I know if my cat needs replacing, what are the signs?

I thought that was normal. I have been behind many cars with a cat in stationary traffic and noticed the stench of rotten eggs from the car in front.
