Mainly common sense to us folks. Sniff the oil filler and radiator water, good underbody check, ask to see last 2 MOT certs to see if it's been given a "haircut".

A "friend" of mine once bought an old Merc with 150000 on the clock, ran it into the ground (275000) and decided to give it a haircut before auctioning it off. Took the speedo out and it had a message scratched onto the back - Oh no not again.
