finally got the parts for the petrol to diesel conversion :D

i am using the petrol gearbox and ird both which was left in the freelander and just the engine removed.

using a rover L series engine with all the bits that needed changing changed. including the main gearbox mounting plate behind the flywheel.

my problem is there is a thin plate that sits between the ird and the gear box. this plate is a shield for when the k series was in it but it sit about 2" into the bell housing.

does anyone know if this is supposed to be there on the diesels aswell or have i got to remove it?????

cant upload a pic sorry

You mean this part?

I cut it away with a hacksaw. Right up next to IRD bracket, a dremel will do an even better job,

Shield is crap flimsy double layered design and the whole IRD to gearbox has to be unbolted to remove it. It bent stupid when I removed the engine from the gearbox

I've made a template if I ever want to fabricate an aluminium replacement

No not unless you intend going up rivers and stuff, although its supposed to act as an oil drain away from the flywheel,. should the IRD - Gearbox seal fail.

Take some pics of that section when you get the L-series on the gearbox, the L-series might fill the void???

thats what i wanted to avoid doing putting the engine in only to find it shouldn't be there and having to then remove engine to cut it and refit. or cutting it and leaving a open space.
