Hi whilst driving my 2000 freelander i noticed a burning smell inside the car, i then noticed that my driver side electric window doesnt work and it is STUCK open.

I changed the appropriate fuse and when i press down the switch that opens the driver side window i notice that the lights dim indicating that current is flowing to the motor. The lights do not dim when i press the switch upwards to close the window indicating that theres a problem with the switch.

Does anyone know what it could be as the switch does smell the same as the burning smell that i smelt whilst driving. Is it the switch? is it a common problem and how do i repair it.

Please help as the car is left open in the street!

Try swapping the passenger switch to the drivers side.might get you away for now. but it could be the window drive wires come adrift and sanaggled itself up..
If that dont sort it then its yer door skin off and chock the window up;)

Oh no, its raining outside. Heavily. This is making me dislike freelanders, how can you have something so critical fail on so many vehicles? How do i change the switches over, is it a simple procedure? how can i short it so that it closes, i wouldnt even mind if the window was shut.

If the dash/console layout is the same as the 98, the switches are accessible from the rear/sides of the console (with slim hands!)
The switches can be eased/pushed from the front back through the console and removed from the rear. Switches normally burnout fairly cleanly on their contacts. Burning smells do not auger well!!

STOP PRESS !!!!
Ignore my last advice. The switches can be pushed out from behind, through the front on the console allowing the wiring plug to be removed and switches swapped over/shorted out etc as a diagnostic tool.
The last bit about smoke smells still holds true!

Forgot to mention earlier. when you get to look at the switch(es) - check the condition of the wires - if they are melted or burnt - it maybe a failure further down the line - ie motor burnt out and shorted!

If it was raining - it might have been wise to tape a plastic bag over the window to reduce moisture ingress!
