Hi guys,
I have a 2.25 Diesel engine in my series 3 SWB. I purchased this recently for work on our farm so I don't really know too much. The engine seem to run perfectly fine (as well as a landy can!!) except uphill in 3rd and 4th, when it starts to stutter and eventually cuts out. It has no problems on level or downhill slopes.
I have only been putting small amounts of fuel in as it is not MOT or taxed.
Sorry if this is a newbie question, any fixes welcome.
John

Do you have to re prime the diesel pump after it stalls?
If so fuel level too low, if not could be diesel bug in the fuel tank take the pickup pipe out and inspect it.

My initial thoughts:

  • Strainer blocked on tank pick up - raises its head when engine under load and trying to draw more fuel.
  • Change the fuel filter - could be blocked causing same issue as above.
  • Fuel lift pump not working properly - relying on the draw from the fuel injection pump.

Does it just stall or does it gradually lose power until the stage it stalls? Any smoke? How does it start when left a while?

You can get to the pickup pipe quickly - remove drivers seat cushion and remove metal plate - 4 screws. This will reveal top of fuel tank where you will see pick up tube, spill back pipe and fuel gauge fixings. A couple of screwdrivers should be all that's needed.

No I don't have to prime the pump.
How do I get to the pickup pipe? I will try tomorrow.
