Re: Thud when reversing
Hi all, just thought I'd post an update on my "thud" problem... so far the car has been in the garage for the past three weeks - Personally, I think that the mechanic is being a bit of a git but there's nothing I can do until he fixes it. What started off as a thud when reversing with the wheel locked, turned into a grating noise while driving, so I dropped it straight to the garage informing the mechanic that it was "probably the prop shaft bolts or the rear bushes" (he looked like he'd just seen a flying pig - I mean, how could a woman possibly even know what these terms meant, let alone pose a theory on what might be wrong underneath a car... ;) ). That will be three weeks ago next Friday. He's telling me some bushes were gone (probably just to make me feel better) but now he's saying that the transfer box is gone. I can't understand how he can tell that when he hasn't even taken it out to check yet. Anyhow, bottom line is he gave me a price of 2,500.00 euro to have it fixed - that was with a new part costing 2,000 euro and labour costing 500. He told me that under no circumstances could a reconditioned part be put in as it would just go again. Anyhow, in spite of him, I've found a reconditioned part and given it to him to put in - part cost me 700 euro. That was given to him last Friday, and it's still not in!!! He's telling me I should have the car back on Wed, and then I need to get rid of it as fast as possible as this transfer box will only go again????? I am gutted as I love my Freelander, even though I've spent a fortune on bits so far. Is it possible that I've just bought a lemon and it's better to cut my losses at this stage?? Anyone any thoughts on this whole transfer box saga??? I think that when a mechanic sees a woman standing in the forecourt, they just make up any old rubbish to make her go away.

Now I am no expert (No **** I hear you all cry) but going by the discriptions I have heard from mates with Hippo's where the IRD has gone they do not drive at all. Lots of crunchy tinkly noises and the feeling of cogs being stripped of their teeth.

If you are thinkin "Saw ya comming" then yeah, quite possibly. If you are also thinking "get a second opinion" then yeah - I am thinkin what you are thinkin.:(

Hi all, (this is starting to resemble "Dear Diary"...) :) Just got off the phone from the 'mechanic'... who informs me that my car is ready to be collected. Apparently the transfer box 'did the job' and it's now driving perfectly again. Mind you, he's also telling me that because I sourced a reconditioned part (for 700 euro as opposed to 2000 for a new one) - I must get rid of the car asap as the reconditioned part will give up the ghost in a few months. Could someone explain that logic to me please because it doesn't make sense to me! Also, he reckons that the fact that the head gasket was replaced about 8 months ago, that it will go again, and next time I'll need a new engine. Anyway, bottom line is that he's insisting that I'm going to haemorrhage money in the long run if I keep the car. I LOVE MY CAR!!!!! Mind you, he still hasn't given me a final figure for the labour cost of installing the part.

I think I'll enrol in a car maintenance course in the autumn!! ;)

I can see me being flamed by Ming etc here - but here goes. I have had head gasket probs on my V6 Freebie and both the local LR Dealer and a LR Rally preparer have stated that "because of liner problems - they will only replace engines, not fix head gaskets". Pretty poor show if yu ask me, but it seems to be common place. Not knowing your engine type, it's difficult to comment further, but (sorry guys) some of the engines used on the Freelanders do appear to be prone to HG failure.
