unimog axle alternative

I did read somewhere that you want to fit portals to at least a 100" chassis. Dont think it works too well on a 90. I might be wrong though. Only ones I have seen at 110 and 130 defenders, 100" RRC's and 109s...

mmmm..bugger thought i may had found a cheaper alternative but it seams not...

on a slightly different note ive been offerd 2 td5 axles for me fender but im not 2 familier with them are they a direct fit to a 200 tdi fender or a bit of fooking about to fit them

I've got a pair of axles from a 1990 landcruiser vx ( I think ), they look strong with locking diffs , might be a cheap upgrade for the disco :D .

What are you trying to gain Wiltshire? Strength or just ewer items? I dont think the td5's are any stronger better off looking for a v8 110 front diff

wide angle propshafts, yea sounds great I think I'd go for the propshaft but I think its still a single pin diff so no stronger might be slightly stronger elsewhere internally but I dont think so or not enough to go to the effort of swapping them out I don't think. 4 pin diff 24 spline shafts and the more HD cv's that came on V8 110s I would change. I would only go td5 if your current units are worn out leaking in need of a refurb. 24 spline are no stronger, ok could be argued it has more spline contact but the diff is no different (is it) except the number of splines in the internal gears. The bits of diff that go often is the crown wheel teeth due to the pinion pushing the crownwheel away and then stripping the teeth. The other weekness is if you frequently spin up wheels then the internals gears are working billio and seize on the shaft and break the center casting. Well just fitting 24 spline diffs cure none of the above problems. The only way is really a 4 pin diff that is pinned (I think the crown wheel is slightly beefier anyway on 4 pins). But Alas these are rare and fetching decent money with the trials guys. If anyone has one for sale cheap Let me know Lol cos I need one mabe 2 lol! Everyone is after them!

cheers jai...thats the sort of info i was after..

i must admit i run 10 spline diffs/halfshafts and apart from when i got stuck in the thick ice a couple of weeks ago and popped the diff,i havent broke one for about a year..

so maybe i stick wiv them untill summit goes badly wrong wiv em

This forum is great and fun but somtimes the info wanted gets lost in **** taking lol, Well

I am about to refurb a front axle, the brake calipers are done, and are the bigger 110 ones, I need to get the axle ends off and clean them up, fit the new disks, I am keeping 10 spline as the cv's are slightly stronger and I am going 4.7 ratio (series Diffs) because I want my low range to be lower as the tyres are huge. also because by some chance I may have some money and able to get Ashcroft shafts and Cv's and a locker It will be grand. But I need to win the lottery first or sell lots more s/h and refurbed landy bits!

If I get a 24 spline axle Ashcroft CV's will need some hub or stub axle machining not massive but some none the less.

Hy!
3 things of intrest for you ... maybe.
A link.

The Disco TD5 axels should be stronger but it´s isn´t a strait DIY job to fit under a Def.
The Military spec 90ty rear drum brake axel diff is the same stronger on like V8 ones. Fit in the 300Tdi Disco and 90ty axel´s (tested;) )

Sincerely yours.
Chr.
