UK to OZ - Fuel Tanks

Any views on fuel tanks. From reading and researching - reckon we can get away with not needing long range fuel tank/s?. At least until hitting Australia. Wondered though what people think about the arch tanks you can buy and fit yourself in addition to existing fuel tank - can take approx 44 - 50 ltrs and costs £230 approx says Tom from safari-equip. Tom says that as you fill tank as normal, floods to arch tank and the one he is selling doesn't need tubes etc. and dead easy to fit. Any views?
 
sounds like its gravity fed. no views as such, most people would say, just buy jerry cans. but with you going away for so long, its prob worth investing in aux tanks of some kind. This means that you dont have to lug around over 20kg of jerry can every time you fill up and the extra space issues.

is that 230 for both sides? 90-100 litre aux capacity would be good. Also check out frogs island 4x4 as i think they do aux fuel tanks too.

Thanks Griffdowg. Will check it out further but reckon thats the cost for just one. Will have a look at the site you mentioned. With kids and full length heavy tent - jerry cans might do it - it is just a space thing we need to think about - just wondering really whether worth considering or ingoring and just stick with the cans.
 
I looked at the tank that fits in the filler neck also, seems like a good idea.
What i settled on was an extra tank under drivers seat with a pipe and tap to the main tank. Main reasons were that if fuel was stolen hopefully only the main tank would be hit and if you can fill at different sources then if you end up with a dodgy load of fuel, the other tank should be clean.
 
I have the underwing in filler line tank at the rear it works real well as it gives you extra capacity and requires no extra guage or taps pumps etc so is simple. It would probably give you enough extra range with a tdi for usage anywhere in the world. I also have an ubderseat tank with pump that feeds into the rear tank , but then I am running a V8 . The rear tank uses otherwise unused space. and is at low level so is better than jerry cans in many ways JMHO:) . HTSH
 
i presume you have a 110 Trac2man? any thoughts on aux fuel tanks for a 90? cheaper the better! currently planning on jerries for Morocco but would like the no fuss aux fuel tanks if price is reasonable.

Sorry cant advise on 90 as never owned one, might be worth looking at alisport site for ideas , 90 not usually first choice for long range travel:)
 
I did not say that 90s could not be used , just that logistically they dont make for the first choice as an expedition platform .

what twin tank set up do you use , as a matter of interest ? :)

On my 90 2.5td, standard side tank, plastic Td5 tank at rear, twin fillers, twin senders and dials, twin full size 200tdi fuel filters (in case of a dodgy batch of diesel on expedition) and an electric switchover valve - plus I threw in a veggy kit while I was at it - seemed daft not to!

To increase range further, 2 jerry cans on rear tailgate - plus can use em for extra veggy whilst in UK.
 
I have a 110 and the under rear wheel arch tank is been great, as sometimes the fuel stations are far and few between. One should also keep the weight low especially on rough tracks. I found that by fitting a water tank of the same size on the opposite side balanced the vehicle as well. It is also great to have water on tap whenever you stop to camp in the bush etc. It has been reported that Jerry cans and gas cylinders may be emptied out by officials in countries like Egypt, deemed, weapons of mass destruction.
 
Hmmmmmm - interesting. Like the idea plus others posted. We are still chewing the cud - interesting about fuel disposal issues at borders due to security
 
I have twin tanks on my 90 . I got a stainless tank for under the back (where the TD5 tanks goes)from WH wheel carriers in the Uk. Fills up form the original filler and has a v8 pump to pump form the second tank to the main tank when empty. Works fine and used it alot while traveling. Remeber that you will need a second tank as in Aus there are roads the lenght of southampton to inverness with no petrol stations . So we used the second tank as well as jerry cans on the trailer

Definately like the idea of these over the long range fuel tank option. Are these something we can consider fitting ourselves - or is specialist help needed?
