hi folks.
I have a Freelander2 TD4 53 plate 5 door.
About a month ago it started to play up, randomly kangarooing and acting like there was a fuel problem. We had been using supermarket fuel so thought I may be a crap quality causing a blockage of the injectectors.
We've used cleaners (both injector and full Diesel system) and have had varying results, sometimes appearing to be a massive success and other times doing absolutely nothing. There are times when it can run for days without a problem then others where it suddenly kicks in and plays up. The one thing I can say is consistent is that it only ever clears following a start ie you can run for an hour bouncing away, stop the car for ten minutes, restart and it'll be fine (other times it can stay like that for numerous starts), what I've never seen it do is correct itself during a drive. Sometimes it causes the engine management to kick in which reduces the power and seems to remove the problem while crawling down the road, then engine management stops and the bouncing restarts.
Problem 2: seemed to start about 3-4 days ago, it became more and more difficult to engage the gears. At first I thought it was just me but the missus reported the same problem then today it stopped working altogether (or at least that's what it seemed at first).
Now I've realised its the following combination.
1.While the engine is off you can move through gears at will, as normal.
2.start the engine and you cannot get it into gear.
The above led me to believe it was a clutch issue however there's been no warning signs, no slipping, burning smell etc........
However.....
There's a 3rd combination as such.
Put it into gear while engine is off , dip the clutch and start the engine. You can then move through the gears, selecting them as normal (if maybe a little clunkier than usual), lift the clutch and away you go, no clutch type issues, slippage etc. i then stopped the engine and on restarting in neutral was able to dip clutch and use it as normal.
I'm starting to wonder if this is all related and something like an engine management fault or some faulty safety valve etc.
Any thoughts (for a totally non mechanical owner) would be appreciated.
Peter
