Any other LR type would have an established suite of engine transplant options. Yet when I'm looking for inspiration regarding an alternative to the 1.8 petrol timebomb, the crack seems to be, get it running, sell it on, don't look back. My query is ; Has anyone researched the possibility of retrofitting the new Freelander 2 petrol thing to the old skool body?
If I could fit an engine that I could trust, then keeping the car becomes an option. It's not just for me, I've got the dogs to think about.

I'm not sure it would fit. But even if it did, you'd need to make sure the drivetrain can handle the extra power the new engine produces. Also, you might want to upgrade the brakes to handle the extra weight and power as well.

And the new diesel from the Freelander 2 is made by the french (PSA group). They aren't exactly known for building reliable engines in the first place. If you're going for engine replacement, I'd try the Ford diesel from the Defender...

ah bless ya ignorance - PSA together with Ford have been jointly developing some highly reliable diesel engines for over a decade now

Maddie keeps mentioning the Rover 220 turbo petrol engine which is believed to fit with some modification though I've never actually seen one. One of the other guys on here was posting info from some Australian guys (I think) conversion with a Mazda engine including piccies which was really interesting. Gave all the problems & solutions encountered & worth searching for if you're serious.

Here it is

Well, I can name a dozen guys who had their peugeot/citroen HDi diesel engine wrecked. But I must admit, I haven't heard anything from the LR's...

so what's your point ? - seeing as from as nearly all recent ford/renault/citroen/pug engines come from the same design group
