Hello everyone,
we just about made it home tonight in our TD4 2001 freelander. We were sat in it while the engine turned over and nothing happened. I could hear the buzzing coming from under the back seat (new pump fitted 10 months ago). So I presume there is fuel getting through. In all fairness the car has not started a few times now so something is starting to go wrong. The electrics all seem to be working. I have got around it like I did tonight by rocking the car in gear, then it starts first time. Maybe its a coincidence or can anybody help me with pin pointing why its not starting sometimes?
Thanks
Nick:confused:

Hi,
Sounds like the pump on the inner wing next to the fuel filter is now giving up. Probably 'rocking the car in gear' is enough to kick it into life. Open the bonnet and ask an assistant to turn on ignition, if the pump is silent give it a sharp tap, if the pump now works then the engine will start.

Thanks guys,
just fired it up first time after listening to the fuel pump whirring away on the ns wing (noisy little thing isnt it!!). This is definately an intermittent fault which I know will let me down at the worst time. Is there a way of testing the pump without being stranded?
Not sure I could take on the fuel injectors if that was the cause. Would that not be more regular though if there was a blockage there?
Thanks

Just put some injector cleaner in the fuel, redex or similar. Fixed my starting problem.
If it sorts it then it will save you alot of messing about.

The underbonnet pump gets noisier as it gives up. Suggest you listen out for it next time you have a non start problem and confirm if it is running then.

Thanks Chaser,
Its averaging not starting about once a week so I will have a listen next time and let you know. It is loud whirring noise once the bonnet is up though so I may consider ordering the part in advance as it doesnt look to difficult to change!!
Thanks

Hello everyone,
car back from garage. They diagnosed the cam shaft sensor as an intermittant fault so replaced it and its running fine (touchwood). They also changed the diff mount which has stopped the thumping noise at the back when you change gear. Its like new again.
Thanks all.
