Turbo recon companies

I sent my turbo for reconditioning as the seals had gone and bearings were worn. I was quoted £100 over the phone but when they got it and stripped it they said it needed loads doing and it would cost £360, about the price of an off the shelf refurb. I got another one off interweb with no play in shaft and no oil leak for £60. Works a treat. Depends how much you trust your own judgement I suppose.

What exactly did they say it needed?

You strip it down, you put in a rebuild kit, and you reuse the same compressor/turbine assembly if it's not damaged.

Kit £25

Compressor/turbine (IF NEEDED) £80

Labour, I would expect no more than an hour and a half to do it so what £45 in labour.

£150 plus P&P?

No balancing needed because the balancing is in the compressor/turbine assembly, they come balanced!

Turbos are simple, REALLY simple, it's a common misconception that there is anything remotly difficult about them.

Loads of guide on eBay.

Labour will be much nearer 50 pounds per hour, employees paye, rent overheads etc etc
I should imagine the cheap quote over the phone is a common ruse as once they have the turbo most people will let them do the work.
