Turbo fault diagnosis required please.......

I have had concerns over the poor performance of my 300 TDi. I have changed lift pumps etc to no avail. So I decided to fit a boost gauge and guess what......I'm only seeing .4-.5 bar boost pressure under load. I have checked my turbine and there is a tiny bit of vertical play and minimal horizontal play. There is sone evidence of oil within the boost pipes. Any ideas people???

Do I need a new turbo?

Is the waste gate partially open? Or are any of the pipes split?

Disconnect the rod, and check does it move freely or by dismantling. The wastegate may have just got a bit gummed up and stuck, some penetrating oil and a wiggle can free it. Also is the inlet manifold gasket good, no leaks?

In addition to checking your wastegate you need to check you haven't got any split pipes (or intercooler) which will leak pressure off, you would probably hear a wooshing sound if you have. Also check the air filter is clean and none of the intake hoses are delaminating and restricting airflow in to the turbo. Might be worth a quick spin with the intake hose disconnected from turbo to prove that. Also check the boost pipe to the top of the injection pump, if it is blocked or leaking then the pump wont put extra fuel in when the turbo starts boosting, this in turn will result in less exhaust gas being produced and limit the turbo's full potential. Finally check the injection pump boost pin is free to move.

Also worth proving the accuracy of your gauge, if you can bodge / connect it to a tyre at 15 PSI then it should read 1 bar, 30 PSI 2 bar

If I didn't have cause to think that there was a problem I would agree but I don't think it is necessary given that performance is way down. It literally confirms my thoughts.

Tried looking for potential boost leaks today to no avail. However, I did notice that most of the fins both on my radiator and intercooler were missing so I decided to purchase replacements today. I'm thinking that the loss of boost could well be a result of my corroded intercooler. Hopefully this will resolve my problems. If it doesn't at least I will have replaced two much needed items and will be one less thing to consider in diagnosing the issue of a lack of boost.

Yes intercooler could be leaking which would waste boost to the atmosphere
