Freelander 1 TTD4 diesel leak.

Hi,

Have owned the Freelander for around 3 months now and it has always been juicy but on the last few trips there is a strong smell of fuel when I get out and rainbows in the water on the road. I think it's coming from the front drivers side. We just had a baby two weeks ago so I just don't have time to check it out yet. And obvious or usual suspects I should look for please?

Drivers side smacks of high pressure fuel pump.
Check out the threads for repair - O rings usually.

Pretty common issue, particularly in winter.

As above high pressure fuel pump, most likely one of the valve section, if you are going to repair it your self you may as well do all 3 valve section, it could be the O-rings on the regulator, again just repair that as well when doing the job even if it looks ok.

A special tool is required to remove the HPFP
BMW Injection Pump Wheel Assembly Tool E46 318D 320TD 525d 530d 535 4849 | eBay

If doing the job your self allow at least a full day to remove and repair - refit, if just replacing with an already repaired or refurbished or new pump, allow at least 3-4 hours.

every thing must be clean when repairing.

Just an update. ( Months later)

I bought a second hand pump and replaced it myself using the special tool.
Bought on eBay and re sold. Was a god step by step video in YouTube to follow.

Not a job for you if you do not have the tools or skills. But very doable.

Attempted to refurb the old pump but the front section had rounded off bolts. ( Possibly the problem in the first place with badly torqued nuts)

Runs perfect now. Hope it's helpful.
