Trialling - how do I get into it?

I enjoy green laning, but I also like a challenge. I'm considering having a go at RTV trials in my Disco Tdi. However, I also like owning vehicles that are as close to standard as possible. Are RTVs suitable for what I have in mind?

I live in mid-Wales, so I'm going to have to travel a bit. I'd welcome any views on clubs in North/South Wales or the Welsh Borders.

I must admit though, I have very little feel for what trialling really involves. I know you have to get around a course, but that's about it! Any advice very much welcome.

Join a local club ..

Seriously.

Doesn't matter what I say, my local club might have different local rules to yours or indeed different marking systems, levels of difficulty etc. As you'll have to join a club to compete anyway, trawl the interweb for a local club as a first step.

Yeah good question Dolly.

I've spent the last year modding my Disco (just because I do a lot of off-road work, and during the winter do more miles off-road than I do on-road).

Would be interested to see with a bit of skill, and a couple of hundred quids worth of mods/up-grades, how far she'd go.

Thanks. Local clubs are out as they're all CCV in these parts - spaceframes with V8s and wheels and not a lot else. I'll see what I can find a bit further afield.

RTV trials are for road vehicles and are normally just a bit tamer than CCV trials although the same rules apply. You have 10 gates (2 canes opposite each other ) and the idea is to get through all the gates without hitting the gate or stopping at all,whatever gate you get to that is your score so if you only get to gate 10 you score 10,if you get to the last gate you score a clear and the aim is to get as little points as possible.

They've started doing the odd RTV trial alongside the CCV and its not too far from you.
If you find you like it you can always do CCV as there are different classes depending on what mods you've got from road going vehicle to full blown space framed 4 wheel steering V8 monsters! All you need for CCV is a full rollcage,harnesses,fire extinguisher and tow hitch front and rear.
I've just started CCV trials in the series with Pembrokeshire Mudslingers and I'm having a great time and I drive it there and back as its my road vehicle.

Interesting. They often have stuff near me. CCV isn't going to happen for me on cost grounds. I have a Discovery, it's bog standard, that's what I can use. Didn't know they'd started doing RTV now as well though. Thanks for the tip-off.

Click on the link V8Jon posted above, there is a RTV/CCV on this Sunday. I've done two RTV's with them in my standard 90 and it was great fun. Pop along and see what its all about.
Saying that I've recently bought a CCV trailer (V8 ex challenge truck) which I hope to be competing in on Sunday.

The Wye and Welsh do a lot of RTV trials (or used to when I was trialling!). Might be a bit far south for you but they have events as far north as Hay on Wye.

Rtv's are great fun. I run a 300 disco,its lightly modified, rtv's really makes you think about what you realy need to change to make a good offroader without going mad. I've been beaten by some standard landys on road tyres.
