I've possibly got a problem with my transfer box (lt230 on a '98 300tdi 130), and hoping someone be able to help with the diagnosis. history of it is as follows:

I had a grinding/whining, and very temporary lock up of transmission when doing about 60 mph. got it home and discovered the rear oil seal had gone from behind the handbrake, taking the rear input shaft bearing with it (bearing and race both trashed). so i removed the input gear, the front bearing seemed fine so i just changed the rear one and the seal - reasembled, and drove better after, though still some whining.

a few weeks later the front diff failed, replaced with rebuilt ashcroft unit with a locker, pegged, with the HD ring gear.

a week after that the clutch failed (transmission chain reaction I'm thinking at this point), so i replace with a valeo unit and a new hd release arm just in case.

now I've got a pretty bad metallic unsteady rattling (ball bearings in a washing machine might be a way to describe it), in all gears (although more auduble in 3 4 and 5), that appears only when accelerating mildly (I'd say somewhere around 1/3 of revs in each gear). I'm guessing it's transfer box related, but not sure what... any ideas? I'm probably going to end up ordering a recon lt230, but I'd really like to figure it out first.

check oil in both boxes for level and contamination, you can check t/box by removing sump plate

yeah I'll do that this afternoon, though t-box and main box were both full a couple of weeks ago (still, I'll have to drain them now anyway to check for metal in the oil).

is there anything clutch side that might make similar noises - loose thrust bearing mybe? only this latest noise only started after the new clutch went in.

solved it!

turned out to be combination of a loose mud shield on the front diff flange, and UJ at the back had lost all the roller bearings out of 2 of its cups (looked fine on the outside. very weird).
