help, my 2002 4.4 l322 is leaking oil from the transmission oil cooler from where the pipe enters the cooler, i have replaced the pipe thinking the 0 rings had failed in the pushfit fitting but its still leaking, so it must be the oil cooler its self. i noticed i small fault in the aluminium casting when i replaced the pipe but it seemed insignificant. as anyone had this problem? and does anyone know the procedure of changing the oil cooler? which seems to be my only option?

I guess you're positive it's oil....the plastic Coolant manifold attached to it has been known to get brittle and be a cause of a coolant leak....

If it is definatly Transmission Oil, and you have replaced the Pipes, time to replace the cooler body itself...!

yer, its deff oil, can clearly see it dripping out the end of the new pipe, do you kno how i get the cooler off? does it just pull off?

As attached from RAVE....

Looks like it just pops off....

I have water leaking from somewhere on or above the gearbox, is this where the transmission oil clooler is located. thanks for any advice

apologies for not introducing myself, you can probably tell my name is Mick and I'm currently running a petrol 2002 range rover, td5 disco and a petrol 1969 2a swb
the cars a 4.4 v8 vogue 2002. I need to get it in the air to see properly but the water is dripping (quite fast) from the transmission box on the drivers side so I'm guessing the leak is on or above the transmission box on that side. Definitely not aircon as the coolant level drops with the leak, thankyou for any advice
anyone know if this coolant pipe is a common problem, leak only starts when the engines hot and water pressure has built up if that means anything

Both are done from above, the Valley Pan Gasket is the large gasket that sits in the Vee of the engine under the intake manifold...

Picy...

And it seals this coolant channel which sits in the Vee...

The Coolant manifold at the back of the engine is an aluminium item that looks like an exhaust manifold but is used to distribute coolant between cylinder heads and the heat matrix I believe (pic attached)....

Do you have the RAVE workshop manuals??

Can be found here... http://www.landroverweb.com/Pdf-files/Manuals/Workshop Manual L322 Range Rover.pdf

Among other sources..

Hi saint.V8
just been watching a video on changing the valley pan manifold and would say it's beyond my capabilities, is the coolant manifold similar? if so I'll put it into someone that knows what they're doing

just seen your last reply after I posted this, looks like you have to go through the same process to get at the manifold so might be best if I get someone else to do it

It would be prudent to get a garage to check where the leak is from, we/I are just offering an opinion based on the the info you have given us and what we have seen as the more common issues.

There are a few pipes that run at the rear of the engine, but the more common failure is the aluminium manifold....esp. as you say it happens once it is warm....when it gets warm, cracks open due to heat expansion...that being said it could be a brittle gasket that the aluminium manifold is sealed to the heads with....

Get a garage to do an investigation before telling them to blindly change components.

Both are of similar difficulty in getting at...

cheers mate, stripped the cover off and still can't see exactly where but the leak seems to be in that region, the machanic that will do it is a friend and very meticulous but it may be it needs stripping down to locate the problem. I've been crawling all over it with a torch and had no luck so it's over to the experts. thanks for your help
