transfere box ?????

hi everyone, just to open new to the page and new to serie3 ownership, i have a loud metalic noise come from the gearbox area of my 88 light weight , i have been told it is the transfere box and as a fault finder i engaged 4x4 and the noise lessened considerably, how much am i lookin at to remedy this as i am not the most mechanical one in the world, am hoping to fit a reconditioned 2.5 disco engine and free wheeling hubs in the new year and dont want to carry out work that will need upgrading anyway with the engine change, any ideas

Welcome Mike. Did you engage 4x4 by pushing down the yellow lever or pulling the red lever back into low range? It makes a hell of a whine in low range (straight cut gears usually), are you sure you didn't have it in low to start with (which is red lever pulled backwards)?

Unless its stopping you driving anywhere, you may as well wait until the engine change. It's an unusual fault if it is as you describe it.

Thanks for the reply .... the noise was evident before I tried engaging the yellow lever down I tried disengaging it but the rattle sounds loads worse in two wheel drive which makes md think something is amiss in the transfer box . Static just revin the engine it isnt there . . Am loving my series 3 . .... but gettingused to no brakes took a while

Like James says take plate off and have a look. If you "upgrade" to a 2.5 I think you'll probably end up keeping the series gears and transfer so worth checking now in case its something that will cause further damage.

Has someone been changing the red lever when its moving. If so you may have chipped teeth in there. You're not really mean to, you're meant to come to a complete stop first...I know army boys double declutch them but then again they rebuild the gearboxes for ****s and giggles...

BTW if your brakes are crap that is not normal! They'll never feel as good as a modern car but if adjusted and sound they should be good enough to stop you pretty well in an 88.

I'd do this: Chock wheels. Put all gear levers in neutral. Drain transfer box oil. remove bottom plate. Check that the big transfer gear you will see is not loose. Remove round plate off back of transfer box, check that the castellated nut is not loose.

Try running it with hi low lever in neutral position and go through your normal gears this will drive everthing upto and including the intermediate gear possible the circlip [CCN122] has failed on the front end of output shaft that goes to drive both rear and front when 4wd selected.
