I have researched all sorts of combinations to try to both raise and
lower the gearing on a Land Rover. Replacement gear sets for the
transfer box, new gear box and underdrives/overdrives.
One last thought, is there any transfer case of any make that has
three speeds -
1 to 1 for normal driving, an overdrive ratio for cruising and an
underdrive ratio for the very difficult bits. My outlandish thought
was to see if such a transfer case can be made into a dual unit with
the LR case.

There are no true 3-speed T-cases AFAIK....neither for Rovers nor for
Cruisers.
The next step up is always a 'splitter' before the (2sp) T-case, be it in
an Unimog or smaller utility vehicles like an Italian Bremach or Scam.
(for the first two there also exist crawl-boxes, same concept, much lower
gearing)
While splitters only change the ratio slightly, some by choice under- or
overdrive (1.0/0.8 vs 1.0/1.25 in case of Bremach & Scam).

As for aftermarket T-case ratio's: Marks Adapters down under makes
interesting replacement sets for Cruisers and I think Rovers
too....0.92/2.8 (instead of the factory 1.0/2.0-2.4) or 1.08/3.04....this
extra choice makes it easier to either live with the stock diff's, or make
road-use/high-range easier with low-ratio diff changes, while still
enhancing low range.
