Can anyone point me in the right direction, i have a 1990 classic with a factory 2.5 turbo diesel with a manual gearbox and its done 86k.The problem i have is that the transfer box has expired whilst driving on the motorway, i managed to limp to a garage in off road mode but they have said that the chain drive in the case has worn through the housing and is wrecked.
The problem is that they have said that the box is a marine unit and that thease are hard to find,so if this the case does anyone know of any alternatives that can be used without costing the earth.
The car runs great and is very economical and dont want to throw away or break.
Any help guys.......
Regards,
Keith.

Hi Keith,

My trans went some time ago and I managed to get one from the guys at Ashcroft, although mine was for a P38 (the Borg Warner version) I think they do do the version for your Classic. It would not do you any harm in getting in touch with them, they are a real helpful bunch. I live in Portugal and they sent my Borg without any problems (cheap on the shipping too, 50 Squid only).

Here's the link to their page about the Borgs:

Ashcroft Transmissions

and here's their number: Phone: 01582 496040

Hope that helps. All the best,

Phil

Cheers Phil, this looks like the place to help me out. I'll phone them in the morning.
Regards,
Keith.

I think they are refering to your engine as being based on a marine unit as it will be the Vm unit if its a factory deisel, the transfer box is made by borg warner and shouldn't be to difficult to find. You'll need one from a rangerover rather than a discovery/defender as the rangerover one uses a viscous coupling and the others don't.

Where are you based? If yer anywhere near Birmingham, try TM Transmissions and ask fer Tony. Top bloke he is, a diamond geeeeeezer. If yer want his moby number, PM me.

alternatively, just buy a transfer box off eBay. They're not madly expensive anymore. I sold one for £20 a couple of weeks ago on there - but mine wasn't the Viscous one.
