I need some advice again. My difflock has not worked for some time I have not needed it but I like things to work as they should. The problem is in the transfer box but Im not sure if it can be fixed without costing more than a new one. I use the landy for work on building sites with a trailer Ive been told that a disco transfer box would be the way to go. Will this make much of a difference on site its never been rough enough that Ive needed the difflock so far and I do between 2 and 3 hundered miles a week. Any advice thanks:confused:

You really need to diagnose the 'not working'.

The internal parts are very robust indeed. The link mechanism from lever to box is a bit of weak and cheap design, and the lever itself may possibly be too gungy to move as far as it should. Lastly, the box mounted switch, cables, connections, dashboard indicator bulb and fuse, any of which may have failed.

So, frexample, it may well be engaging perfectly, but the bulb isn't indicating that it is because a wire has fallen off. Or a circlip or split pin has fallen out of the linkage and it is not engaging. Either if which is fixed in seconds. For nothing!

cheers lads I know its the transfer box thats knackerd through process of elimination I have nowhere apart from my drive or lawn to take out and strip the transfer box and I dont have the confidence to do so That means Ill be paying a garage to do it.Its an r380 gearbox might not be correct name but you will know the one I mean. I understand that the higher gearing will improve her on road but Im not sure if it will make her no good off road

The low ratio is still low on the disco box so shouldn't make much difference off road.

The R380 is the gearbox, not the tranny, which is still a LT230.

How can you be so sure the transfer box isn't working - and if it isn't, problems with the diff are more likely to be the linkage than something major internal. What are your symptoms which make you so sure the tranny box is fookd?

thats what I said r380 gearbox. landy10 asked what gearbox I had to know if it was a stright swap over or not. I broke a half shaft a while back and had no drive difflock or not. I knew it was fooked then but Redhand confirmed it. lve looked at the linkage everything works as it should all the way to the transfer box what happens in there is rocket science to me. Maybe it wont be that expensive to repair I hope but if it is a disco transfer box is what Ill get if as you say its nearly as good as the defender off road
