OK so I just replaced the transfer box on the defender with one from a disco, now I actually quite enjoy the difference it makes to driving the defender, however I have now noticed another leak (the reason I changed it in the first place), I changed the input\output seals before fitting but It may be possible I damaged the input seal when putting it back onto gearbox!!

Before I take the box back out which was a PITA the first time I have had a look at the old box and there is a locating lug on the transfer box which was not on the new one!! Does the hole where this lug is go into the box which would cause a leak, if this is the case can these be bought? As I can't seem to get the old one out.

Could this be what's causing my leak or is it more likely the input seal

Any help appreciated

Chris

when you put the gearboxes together did you use some guide studs to prevent damaging the seal? if not might be a good idea HTSH

I'm assuming you are referring to the position dowel
Yep sometimes tight either comes away with tbox or stays put on gearbox hence why you noticed it missing
It slides into a machined pocket in the alloy so doubt that is the leak
I would clean the areas thoroughly in order to pin point any leak
They often leak on front face near the foremost two securing bolts, notice on your old box there's a shaft flush with casing
There's an o ring in there and another beneath the securing ring

I've fitted a few t boxes on my own on the floor and just lifted em on manually
It's great till they don't line up and the old arm fatigue sets in

Yeah its the position dowel I'm referring to, good to know its only recessed into the box so that confirms its not that looks like its the input shaft seal, I used studs when putting it on so as to prevent any damage but looks like I did it anyway.

Not looking forward to getting under it and dropping it back onto my chest may need to find an easier way
