Got 2010 freelander 2 2.4 diesel….just started getting warning light and message traction control switch faulty….switch engine off then back on and it clears.,..any ideas asto cause

When was the battery replaced? If the battery is over 4 years old, then that's the first thing to replace.
A Freelander 2 needs a perfect battery or data corruption occurs on startup, which normally flags the HDC error shown in the picture.

Many thanks , the warning message is “traction system switch faulty”:this after message “special programs off”….then sometimes “traction system reactivated”…I’ve heard the suggestion about the battery,..a new one Exide Premium EA770 was fitted in 2017 ( when I bought it) and replaced like-for-like in April 2021! These messages started a few weeks ago, usually when I start up, so switch of and restart and messages clear!
 
Does yours have the extra engine earth cable, which goes from the battery to the engine directly?
 
No doesn’t appear to! Just the usual main lead

That may be the issue. Also are you allowing the system checks to complete, before allowing the engine to start? This is important, otherwise data bus corruption occurs, as the voltage drops off during the system check, because the starter takes lots of current, especially when the engine is cold.

good point regarding “system check”…May have been guilty of that …will follow your advice and monitor that!
Also intrigued about the “extra earth cable” should mine have one ? Many thanks

Yes, definitely allow the system check to complete, before allowing it to start. LR should really have added a delay to the start to avoid starting while the check was being carried out, just a Ford did on the Kuga, but alas LR didn't.

The extra cable was introduced on the production line around 2010, later cars having it from the factory.
There's even a position on the negative battery terminal to attach an extra earth cable, you simply need an M6 bolt to do so.
It's easy enough to do DIY, you need a 75cm or so battery cable, with an M6 ring on one end, and an M10 on the other.
This cable is the connected to the upper starter bolt (10mm lug), routing it backwards with the main engine harness, over the gearbox and up to the battery box, so it can connect with the battery negative terminal, where the 6mm lug is joined to the spare M6 thread, using an M6 bolt.
It's a quick and easy mod, which helps prevent various issues when starting.
