Top part of the bulkhead in need of repair

Hi All,

Now that the hand break is sorted the best few things to look at are the exhaust and bulkhead.

The exhaust is simple enough to sort out, but the bulk head well that lies the issue.

The good news is that most of the bulk head is in pretty good nick, it's along the top and around the vents that seem to be issue with corrosion, and the top corners are coming away now to as it is only filler.

Do I, using YRM Metal Solutions.

A, replace the corner panels with their repair panels and make good of the rest, and keep the vents at the front

Or

B, use their extended bulkhead panels, which will plate the lot and make it look flat, losing some character.

I would prefer to keep the vents, but if the cost is going to sky rocket it may not be worth doing

Oh and regardless of which option both door pillars need replacing to.

Decision time.

Oooh that could be the answer.

As the corner panels hopefully could be welded on to those sections, especially the bottom one.

Thanks for the links, I am watching them already on eBay, and be ready to buy them if that's the route I take, which looks very likely.
 
Once the exhaust parts arrive, I'm going to take it the garage to have them fitted and attempt an MOT, to see how it fairs up, and to get a to do list on anything that I be able to myself. At the same time, I be asking their advice for the bulkhead and get quotes for various options. Like to keep it original but important it has to be affordable to do so.

May have the decision made by next week hopefully, I'm hoping it can stay original to
 
Have a look at my thread to give you an idea of how involved it is. If you're considering getting a garage to do the welding for you it will be very uneconomical, almost certainly cheaper to buy a new refurbed galvanised bulkhead and pay a garage to swop them for you (or do it yourself!) rather than pay labour charges for someone else to do all the bulkhead welding.

Looks like an amazing re-build.

I have seen the door pillars at YRM Metal Solutions, but those ones you fitted look much nicer and complete as they go all the way to the bottom as far as I can tell, was wondering which ones those were.

I know it be a lot cheaper if I did the work myself and in the long run I will learn to weld as I could have and will save £££ thousands, but for now and due to time it will be a garage job.

I am partially hoping that the bulkhead wont fail the MOT that much, and therefore can be done at a bit later date, but that is a big ask.

Still once I know what the garage says/thinks and has stopped rubbing his hands together of the potential bank notes, we will go from there.

Small world as its my Dad Series 3 that he is giving me, as he has no use for it anymore and he to owns a 1959 Sprite in green :)
 
swapping a bulkhead is a major job, I took a quote from a garage that makes new bulkheads, £900 for the galv'd bulkhead, £400 on top if you wanted them to paint it and another £1,400 if you wanted them to fit it.

in the end I picked up a good used one on the bay 10 mins down the road for £110 if memory serves and swapped it out myself, have to say wouldn't want to do it again though :D

that could be another option, save you paying a welder, relatively good used ones are always cropping up

got a fair few tips from people on here which made a big difference when doing it

The door pillars and feet are from LR Parts, they're ok by the looks of things, they don't fit perfectly but I don't know how many repair panels do!

Best of luck with whatever you chose to do, hope you've got a few shiny pennies saved up for it! Whatever the cost I'm sure be able to justify it if it was your dad's vehicle and I presume you're unlikely to sell it any time soon!
 
Do you have any more pictures of it (you know we all like pictures!)? What's the reason for the 2/2a door hinges on it if it's a series 3?
 
I see what I can do about adding more pics when I next go and work on it, probably next week.

As for the door hinges, it has had them since we have had the landy, didn't even know they were series 2 ones. From what I believe it is a very early series 3 if that makes a difference. Also the rear tail/brake lights were different to any other series 3 ones I had seen.

Dad changed both of them since then as one was being held together with red insulation tape, now they are slightly more rounded
