Driven a number of Defenders - we have a 2007 Puma Engined Defender 90 County as one of our pool vehicles at work currently along with a 2011 Disco 4....
The ride in the Classic is much more supple compared with the Defenders - they use progressive long travel springs and softer bushes...
I love my L322 and I loved my P38's but a sorted Classic on Coils I would say is a softer more supple ride, the early model classics without the Anti-Roll bar to tend to wallow about , bit like being on a large row boat, but you get used to it, and after learning the roll behaviour you soon lose the automatic reflex reaction to over compenstate the steering (seems like you are weaving all over the road as you tend to try and correct the body roll) but you get used to that.
The later Classics with AR Bars are a lot less roly-poly.
My 1993 had the early variant of the EAS system, the same that was added to the 1992 LSE's, and acted as a test bed for the P38 system.
That one felt more like a P38 - the ride was a bit harsher, but more stable than a coiler.
The seating position for a 6'3" gent is comfortable, although my head was only and inch or so from the roof!! and the steering wheel can't be adjusted for reach or tilt, so a compromise was needed on the seating position.
Both mine had Electric Seats, albeit the 1993 had memory seats and mirrors.
The '88 Vogue SE, was a true workhorse, she lasted me 4 years before the rear crossmember and the outriggers rusted to dust....far to much work for me to do or pay for, so she went to an ex-work colleague who bobtailed it, and I believe she is still active on the trial scene, but unconfirmed. in the years I had her, she didn't fail to start once and she only failed once which was my fault - on a offroad jaunt I came across a large patch of mud and water - I decided to tackle the mud rather than the water and she got stuck, first time ever....we used a mates Series 2A to tug her out but during the recovery the poor thing started running really rough. We limped home, and off with the heads - she had suffered the common Camshaft wear to the point the valves were hardly lifting...she had been losing uumpph for a few months so I guess getting stuck was the last straw....I stripped the heads off, timing cover and ancillaries, replaced the Cam, Followers, valves, seals, New Head Gaskets, Valley gasket, degreased the internals, new plugs, leads, cap, coil, Ignition amp, thorough clean of the intake system and ram housing etc etc etc....she ran sweet as a nut afterwards better than ever - pity 18 months later she failed the MoT.
My second Classic was a 3.9 Vogue SE on LPG I bought this one from Northampton....
She never missed a beat andthe only time she failed to do anything was traced to a small resistor in the LT side of the ignition system.
She had a hard life, lugging stuff around, she wasn't much to look at (then again neither am I) but she would truly urge you to drive her - she was great and I'd still have her to this day if some c**ts hadn't nicked her and then burnt her out.....Gutted...
If i had the space and the money I'd have an L322 for day, and a Classic to play unquestioned.
If I had to put my hand on my heart and if someone said we'll take the L322 of you and give you a truly sorted Classic, that we will pay for any work required to keep it mint I'd take the Classic - they are so much more fun to drive.....(don't let my L322 hear that btw
)
