I've got a Freelander (which I'm under the impression is the XEI). It's the 1.8, petrol model. When I purchased it September 2004 (new), the order states XEI and petrol. However the bloke we bought from is telling me it's an E model and the XEI only applied to the diesel model. Hence he's trying to give me less for the car (we want to trade it in for a Disco).

Anyone have any idea how I can tell what model I have? I believe LR have stopped making the petrol engines so the only specs I can find now apply to diesel vehicles. It's got air con and alloys if that helps?

Well, I'm assuming you mean the station wagon 5 door? I looked on Parkers.co.uk and found a 54 plate XEi 1.8 litre petrol.

They done the XEi on the hard back model 3 door too.

Print the above parkers pages off and thrust it down the dealers throat.

thanks Marksurry - very helpful . I've got the 3 door hard back version. how do we know the page on Parkers refers to a petrol model though I really need to get my facts right before I start fighting my corner with the sales rep.

They made a 1.8 litre petrol, 2.5 litre petrol and a 2.0 litre diesel. So, if it's 1.8 litre like the parkers guide says, it has to be petrol.
Check the log book too, it should have engine size, fuel type and trim level (XEi).
If you go to the Parkers Home page you can put the year in and see what trim levels and engine types they produced.

"Select year/plate" 2004 (54)
On the next page you'll see this:
"Select a derivative". Click on the down arrow to see all the models available in this year/plate.

Jenny please be aware that 3 door petrol models are not "desireable" for dealers. They have a terrible reliability problem, which is why LR have stopped making them.
Depending on how much you Disco is, hold your corner as best you can, but believe me, price guides are out the window on this one.
I base my buying on something being worth what i'm willing to pay for it.
Play hard to get with the dealer, let him start chasing you, if he doesn't youve had your best offer, and if he advises you to sell yours privately, you really have had your best offer.
Do your homework, you may see ones like yours advertised for X amount, but are they selling?
