Hi I HAVE A 2006 RANGE ROVER VOGUE DIESEL.

Will chipping the engine with a plug and play unit effect the autobox in anyway?.

My last two cars, p38 and shogun sport both got chipped and it made a massive difference in performance and economy.

However i spoke with a friend yesterday who chipped a nissan navara and he sais it played havoc with how the auto box performed?.

advise please:)

iv had a p38 range rover and that was chipped.. and it was so much better on disel.. it might just of been mine but i think the gear box worked better with the chip.. as the p38 i have now dont hold the gear as long as i think it should and it allways seem to be in the rong gear. and its very slow and slugish ....and if i keep it i will be getting it chiped.....but i dont know anything about the plug and play black box??... but id take the car and have it set up the way you want it and have it set up by people with the no how.. just to be safe... i know you CAN push the gear box to far as its a heavy car...but my old one never had a problem and i was beating the life out of it. drifting at asda car park in the snow while the wife was doing the shoping there was two subarus playing. that stoped there messing around to watch i must of been doing a figer of 8 for about 30 mins and all i got was a beep beep and the gear box oil had got to hot so i stoped....so id say youed be very unlucky if it did mess your gear box up.. best of luck

I have just removed the PSI powerbox from my '99 dhse, I will be selling it soon and getting the ecu rechipped. Powerbox did make a difference to performance after the turbo kicked in at about 2500 rpm.

Get the ecu mapped do not use a plug and play job as stated it does not work well as it only corrupts the injection pump signals on the p38a diesel
On the l322 as it is a coman rail diesel mapping is far better than a chip box

All a remap does is modify the fuelling on an old M51 ECU, not much different to what a power box does.

Don't chip it - The GM boxes on the M57 vehicles can't take the extra torque. Or chip it and have a couple of gearboxes ready.

If you want a more refined drive get the petrol version.

i can not say much about the power box:confused: as its a new thing to me and know nothing about them .but most people seem happy with them.. but with the ecu chip you can play with everything not just the fuelling. a simple £150 chip would change most of the factory settings and thats one you could have sent in the post. if you spent the day at a remapping center you could have a talk with them and go through wot you would like out of your car and they will program a chip just for you:) and get the car to drive as you would like. and for about the same money. as i think a new power box is around £350:confused:... i would get a chip for the ecu just to be on the safe side:) ;)

Many thanks fella

this i will look into:)

Why? How? (Excuse my ignorance)

Because the ZF4HP22 gearbox is running at near it's maximum torque handling capacity with the standard diesel, add a re-map or power box and the engine produces more torque than the boxes rated limit. Ergo it will fail sooner with a power box than it would without. Mine went at 104K miles.:(:(

Is that with more aggressive driving or would it have the same effect if I continued to drive like Captain Slow but occasionally put my foot down when overtaking or pulling out of junctions?

If this was a real problem surely the chipping inductry would have cottoned onto it by now and there would be a lot more literature out there about this?

datatek id say you have looked in to this and you know wot your talking about. as you have been through the the nightmare yourself:mad:... if i had a new shape range rover. i dont think id change a thing on it ... if something brakes. and it will:doh: it would cost so much to fix..a gear box on a new shape range is around £2000. so on the p38 disel. id take the chance of haveing it chiped or remaped. but i dont think the new shape should be played around with at all......id swap the disel one for a petrol one and spend the £2000 on driveing that:D:D

Car drives lovely.
unsure about alot of answers around gearbox issues etc? ,
had my p38 chipped for 3 years and it ran great.( but it was a manual)
also bought a shogun sport that mitsubishi installed under warranty a ralliart plug and play unit too. also ran for 7 years and no issues? ( also a manual)

gonna have to do some more research i think
thanks

Been driving my dhse chipped since I bought it 3 years ago. It's done 112,000 and hasn't missed a beat in 30,000 miles but I removed the chip about 2 months ago when I renewed my ins and they quoted 'silly money' and also required fitting by a Land Rover approved fitter and an engineers report.

On top of that I did wonder how it would be without it (as I had never driven it for long without). Towing my 24ft c'van is interesting (although not as bad as expected).

I was tempted to replace it but now that Datatek has mention a poss gearbox problem I don't want to push it, in more ways than one :)
