Hello.
I'm about to change my tires. I have the car for a month now and the tires are going.
Mot next month so I guess its time.
My car has the 225/55 R 17.
I guess this are way to wide....even for fuel consumption, besides this tires are way expensive.
What you guys say? How smaller can I go with this rims and keep it safe.
Tell me what you use.
Many Thanks

Hi. the three approved sizes are 215/65/16, 225/60/17 and 235/50/18. I have taken all three measures. the 16 rim is better for off road and the 18 is better for the road. The best road and off road compromise is 225/65/17. For me is the best size. I advise you to continue with this measurement since you also have think on the width of the rim. If you want to lower width, at most I would tell you to go to 215/60/17. It increases the development a little by approximately 2%. If you want to go much lower you will have to change rims because you can endanger your safety.

Hello and Ty for the reply.
Well in 3 or 4 months this car will go to Portugal with me. I was thinking on 215 to be honest I guess 225 is to big for this car...
I don't do off road so I need more for daily driving....
And the roads will be all tarmac one in wile of course some dirt roads but that's about it

Yes, it may be correct 215.
Measure 215/60/17 is the one that leaves the most similar development and therefore would be the best option. luck.

Why do you want narrower tyres?
Narrow tyres won't last as long, as there's less rubber on the road.

I find them to big for this car.
Wider tires are better for dry roads. Narrow more for loose dirt and rain. In the UK we know about how many days we have with rain.
So I guess if I go narrow , I will get bet gas mileage and safety, and lower cost.
I travel a lot on motorway so narrow tires will give a better performance. Specially in the rain
Does it make sense?

Er, not really. LR knew what they were doing to make the Freelander handle all weather conditions, and going to narrow tyres wasn't it.
The reason the Freelander Sport handles so well, is because it has wide large diameter tyres.
Having driven Freelanders for over a decade, on all surfaces, in all weathers, and on all the tyre sizes available, I can say with absolute certainty, be it on dry or wet tarmac, snow, mud, grass or gravel, it's absolutely the best on 235/55/18 tyres.
You might get a tiny reduction in fuel consumption, but you'll have a vehicle that doesn't stop or corner as well as it did, and you'll be buying more tyres, because narrow tyres wear out faster, as they'll slip more than a wider tyre. I got over 30,000 miles out of a set of 235/55/18 tyres, but only 18,000 out of a set of 215/65/16 tyres.

I am not in agreement. A tire will not last more or less just because of the width. The 235/55/18 size can work on all terrains but it is focused on the road and the sport also has specific suspensions. The 55 profile is very low for off road although it can circulate it is not ideal for this. I agree not to reduce the measure but you cannot advise something that is not correct. The mile difference from tire to tire is not at all due to width. I do not want to get into controversy with anyone but it is a combination of width, profile, type of tire, rolling resistance, suspension ... That is why Land Rover engineers allocate each measure to their own as standard. It is true that with a narrower tire it will consume some less and also have less tendency to hydroplaning, but it also depends too on the short or long development that the car leaves, pressures, filters, type of driving. I don't want to bore but technically it is.
Advice if you allow me, keep the size, all season or rain tire, correct pressures, clean filters, healthy injection and efficient driving.
Good luck.
